Fantastic Finishes at the Masters
« on: April 07, 2007, 02:59:36 PM »
CBS is showing "Fantastic Finishes at the Masters."  It's spectacular viewing, but the thing that I notice on the old clips that we really miss now is the view of the old Augusta caddies jumping up and down in celebration after a big holed putt.  There was one awesome shot of Nicklaus and his caddie going crazy after sinking a 40 footer on the 15th hole!  I doubt that such a spectacle would be shown today.  So much of the emotion is gone from the game that it's really a shame.  The Augusta caddies were real men who showed real emotion.  And when their player won, they won real money.  When Gary Player won, he helped his caddie buy a house.  Great stuff!

Enjoy the replays from the PAST -- I am absolutely riveted by my set as people are thanking the high heavens when they make par and bogey putts courtesy of the "new & improved" Augusta National.

You say the "emotion" is gone -- the reality is that the course was never broken to require all the "improvements" carried out (e.g. tree plantings, lengthening various holes -- see #7, to name just one, second cut nonsense and on and on.

Matt,

What a broken record of negativity!  Chill and enjoy the tournament.  The coverage of the leaders starts in 12 minutes.  If it's so miserable, why don't you go beat your dog and improve your mood!  It's golf, after all, not neurosurgery.

You can play verbal dodge ball / putdowns all you want -- I simply said there was nothing wrong with the course to start with -- you make it a point to reference the '78 win by Player and I agree 10000000000% with your observation.

The simple thing you can't admit is that the Masters can do anything to the course and you simply nod in agreement. If quality architecture is your interest -- then blame the folks there for taking a layout and making it so utterly different from the gem that ROUTINELY created such drama year after year.
