Paging Melburnian GCAers...
« on: January 17, 2007, 08:33:08 PM »
Ed Getka -- your post over on the Barnbougle thread reminded me to do this. Feel free to hijack this thread!

I'll be down in Melbourne late March for a few days.

Any chance the chair of the Melbourne chapter of GCA.com could call an extraordinary meeting?

I'm sure I speak for Brian Walshe and others in saying :

Just email / PM us for a game. It will be our pleasure to host you, and also point you in the right direction with other courses.

Promise we won't menton the cricket!

I think St Andrews Beach would be a pretty safe 'cricket-free' game.

Perhaps this might be an excuse for another GCA day out? It will have been 12 months since the last one.

Mark F - is the clubhouse built yet at SAB? Does it  have nice views from its elevated position? Would be good to see a picture some time! I have fond memories...

Philip,

Alas the clubhouse has not been built yet.

Nor the practice fairway/facilites, the hotel whose guests are supposed to fund the maintenance of the two courses, and, oh, the second course whose income will fund the development.

We are still using the rather nice temporary facility that was there last year.

About the only thing that happens there is grass growing...

The permanent clubhouse location will be somewhere else.  As you walk toward the first tee, there was a small valley just between two ridges, and I think it is sipposed to go in there, with, hopefully, a look over the first fairway.

I'm playing down there tomorrow for the first time in almost three months, so it will interesting to see what is going on.

That sounds like my ideal club!
Hopefully I'll be down there in April or early May and I may pester you also, if that's Ok...

Thanks for the generous offers of hospitality. Everyone down there has been so helpful with suggestions. David Kelly and I look forward to meeting as many of you guys as possible as we make our way round.

the 'clubhouse' can be seen in the group shot from last March's GCA event at St Andrews Beach that Mark hosted.  IMO, its functionality is fine.  You can get a decent drink, a decent snack and have a nice indoor and outdoor setting.  Not the spot for a sit-down lunch or a two-hour drinking session, but ideal for a couple of drinks after golf.

No doubt the club has grander plans for the future, but the present is just fine.

James, could you give us a guide to who that fine looking crew is?  I'm sure most have names with whom we are familiar, it would be great to connect them with the faces!

Thanks,
Bill

You can get a decent drink.

Not that decent James.  The pot of tea I had after today's round was appalling.  And skinny milk, no less.

Bill;

Front row, left-to-right:
Chris Kane, Jordy ( a friend of James' from Adelaide), James Bennett, Andrew Thomson.

Middle Row, left-to-right:
Matthew Delahunty, George Blunt, Danny Goss, Sean Walsh.

Back row, left-to-right:
Shane Gurnett, Yours truly, Shane's mate Nick(can't remember last name sorry), and David Elvins.

Missing in action were Brian Walshe, Matthew Mollica, Tony Titheridge, Paul Daley and James L.

It is Nic Phipps.  I think he is a 'Victorian'.

And Geordie is back in Melbourne these days.  Not sure if he is at Riversdale, or back at Woodlands (where he was a member during a previous Melbourne stint).  I think the latter.

Skinny milk with your tea huh.  Are you on a diet?

Oh, if I recall correctly, Shane Gurnett 'won' last years event (best score anyway).

Guys when you meet up pretend to be Brits and drink a proper sized beer not at thimble full. You notice I said Brits as any reference to English would have started a "loser" debate!

It's now 13 months since my last Oz experience, I'm already getting itchy feet and need to get out on your great courses again, I'm looking forward to adding KH, NSW and Barnbougle to my CV. When the time comes - poss late 2008 - I will seek out some of you guys.

On my first visit to Australia in 1986 I discovered the 'Schooner' -  the ideal glass of beer on a warm day. I look forward toi a few more in April. Not a pint, but more than a half. Certainly more than a thimblefull. About perfect, I'd say, especially if VB.

Lloyd,

A couple of new beers have been added to the list. Australia's 'gift' to advertising (Singo) launched a beer called Bondi Blonde with a visit from Paris Hilton. Also Hahn, Redback, and James Boag's are very acceptable warm weather beers and available around the country... unfortunately,  a lot of the trendier pubs in Sydney are now serving beer in those French bistro-style Duralux glasses that are only 12oz (barely more than a middie).

That, happlily, is not the case at NSW should you make it out there for a game.

P.S. During your pop-star glory days, did you ever have the misfortune of having a drink with Molly Meldrum?   :o

Not a misfortune at all! Hilarious. It was at his house!! I think he may of had ulterior motives. His bathroom was all, that is 100%, black marble!

Molly's old luxury semi in Melbourne? I know several people who have found themselves trapped there for the evening... most of them have escaped with their honor intact.

Sounds like you are set in Melbourne and thereabouts, I will email you regarding your other destinations in Australia...

Mark,

You chose a good time  ??? to be in Melbourne to play golf. Probably the most rain we've had in March in quite a few years. Good for the gardens. Good for RM which has run out of water. Not good if it rains when you're on the course. I hope it stays away for your round on Friday.
