"The Masters. I love everything about it. I'll go play the course five or six times when the Tour hits the East Coast. Not to prepare for the tournament, just to go. I love sitting in the Champions Locker Room for breakfast. I love having the junior club sandwich for lunch after we play. For every golfer out there who has dreamed of playing Augusta National, I can tell you it's even better than what you've imagined. The fairways are like carpet, and the greens are so pure you feel like you're in heaven. Even the driving range has the most pristine grass. The place is surreal. History is made there every year. I can't get enough of it."

It is refreshing to hear a TOUR played talk about how he loves to play golf.  Jack Nicklaus loves competitive golf and rarely plays anymore.  Lee trevino said once that he can;t wait for it to get light so he can go play.  I think Phil is of the same ilk.   I met him at the Farm GC at Ranch Santa Fe.  He was gracious and down to earth. I hope he does get past Winged Foot.

Great article.  I'm always struck when I read Mickelson interviews with how level-headed he is.  He may be a FIGJAM, but he has a realistic view of his game.

Perhaps the most intelligent thing to come out of Mickelsons mouth for some time. Nice to see. A pity the USGA wont take any notice.

To his credit, Phil is talking sense on the subject of Tiger's tournament in DC.  Basically says that Tiger has earned the right to host a limited field event if he chooses.

Phil hit 2 fairways in the final round at Winged Foot and was one swing (or two) from winning.

How can he say there's no chance for recovery at a US Open site?

Very refreshing to see someone who loves playing golf (or is it the food?), but what's not to like about cart blanche at Augusta National.

At the Masters they have a first cut, but it's not really rough, and you can play out of it. The U.S. Open doesn't test all of your skills because the penalty for a missed fairway is so severe, there's no chance to recover. I think that's why I love the Masters so much. It's a more complete test than the Open."

Couldn't agree more. I just hope the folks at ANGC understand what Phil is saying. It won't take many more trees or much more rough to turn Augusta into just another US Open venue. It's closer than it ought to be now.
