Aerial of the day #205, Sept 23, 2002.
« on: September 23, 2002, 05:31:34 AM »
As it wasn't too long ago that someone in the treehouse called me a bandwagoneer....
today's aerial is in honor of the Yankees clinching their 5th straight pennant and hammering the Bosox again.

Cheers.

A former yankee great hails from this state*.

I would have thought there would be more land there?
That tight routing certainly makes good use of space.

Wow Mike, this is a real doozy.  The routing is very difficult to figure out for me.  I see some suggestions of the CB-Raynor-Banks style with shorts, eden, raised plateau, double plateau, knolls and wrap-around and frog eye bunkers.  Yet none of them appear like prototypes.  Was this course designed by one of those fellows?  need more clues... :-/

RJ,
This is one of the "other" archies.
He has had his work featured here on the AOTD before,
and even one in your home state.
Cheers.

Must not be near a sand pit or the ocean, very few bunkers ...

And some of them our placed in interesting spots (upper and lower right )

Plus the Shark's Tooth or maybe Molar in the lower right ...

Well, the greenside L-shaped bunkers and raised platform greens with distinct terraces do seem like Langford, but there are no gull-winged diagonal bunkers in fairways or in eschlon that is typical of WL.  One frog-eye however...

More clues... no one seems to be juming on this one early...

BTW, what's up with what appears to be a dammed up water course.  That third segment of water-pond from the top appears to have cart paths going around and bridging over it.  Seems strange to build a bridge right next to the path that goes around it? I hope you can add numbers to the routing of the holes later.  I am perplexed at it. :-[

I have this one now.  I played this in a Junior tournament
almost 10 years ago.  I heard that they have
instituted a tree clearing program since then.  Does anyone
know if has opened up the course at all?  It was pretty
clausterphobic back in 1993.

This one is quite far from either ocean.

RJ, they could have covered up his fairwar bunkers?

In Sioux mythology, this course name means the Great Spirit who keeps the balance in the universe, revealing the great secrets to only a few favoured shamans.

That sounds to me like the curse of the Bambino.   ;D

Yes, I was figuring with all that corn and cow tipping in Iowa,
you would think that Langford would have had more
land to work with.  But maybe he didn't need it?

This is Wakonda.
Designed by William Langford in 1923?

Wack-on-da is what all yankees do to Bosox.

Roger Maris is from Iowa.  He hit 61* home runs.

Not a lot of time for clues today, maybe tomorrow?

Here are a few pictures...

Amazing!   :o  I was going to suggest to Scott that he do this one since there aren't many of any architectural merit in Iowa (I can say that, as I spent the first 22 years of my life there).  I played Wakonda for a US Junior Am qualifier.  It is a good, tough course.  Probably considered somewhat short by today's standards, although opening 4 holes (especially the 1st) were ball-busters back in my younger days.  The par 3 second is interesting with 2 completely separate greens, the longer one playing much tougher IMHO.  Greens slick as snot with a fair bit of undulation. The finishing hole is pretty weak (drivable par 4s are not good finishers).
If they hadn't butchered Veenker Memorial in Ames (the Iowa State University golf team home course), it could've been used to represent Iowa, too.  Some severe Perry Maxwell greens there (of the few originals left).

Brad,
Glad I could help.
Now if you could help me...
are 9 & 10 par 3's or am I looking at a short game area in the lower left.
Maybe you could walk us through the routing.
The fact that the par 3 2nd has 2 greens helped quite a bit...
I keep getting stuck between 12 & 13 or 13 & 14 with a long walk.
Maybe the lack of golf, allowed for the breeding of such good wrestlers?
Cheers.

Thanks Brad.

It looks to be a pretty strong routing.

Can new private courses today have
narrower corridors than publinks?

17 looks to be a pretty big green.
sideways biarritz?

Cheers.

Mike,
The 17th green is very large, but its just your garden variety 2 tier sideways green.  The elevation difference is so large you can clearly see it on the aerial.

Mike and Brad, Thanks for the info and routing.  After looking at Jeff Brauer's photos, I see there is one gull-wing bunker that has gone to a grassed one readily apparent.  I'd be willing to bet that others originally designed have been graded over during the years since the course was first design by WL.   I would truly love a chance to go examine this beauty and attempt to discover if that lost fairway bunker theory is correct.  And, the powers that be at Wokonda should take a field trip up to Langford's other great masterpiece at Lawsonia to see what would be revealed if they would just use a chain saw with some enthusiasm, and let the contours and speed ramps and plateaus have their priority on the style of play on the course.  It appears too choked by trees now (beautiful in fall as they may be)  That was the issue at Lawsonia that they were able to overcome with spectacular results.

The Wakonda routing is a bit strange.  But, it appears stronger than one aspect of Lawsonia which only has dogleg rights favoring the fade.  But the gull-wing crossing fairway bunker placements there cleverly also give favor to the draw at times due to back side of hump and bunker slopes.  I found another routing of Wakonda that would probably be awkward as well but possibly stronger.
front; 1,2,3,10,13,6,7,8,9
and back; 4,5,14,,12,11,15,16,17,18
Perhaps not a huge improvement, if any.  I don't think I like 10 to begin the loop if it is fully across water on the drive.  I can't tell where the tees are exactly from the aerial.  9 and 18 appear weak to end either 9 hole loops.  I can live with 9 par 3, but 18 just doesn't look to be a great closer being short and frog eye bunkers fronting green seemingly demanding a lawn dart approach.  But it is really hard to tell the location of elevation changes on the aerial.  Jeff's photos demonstrate elevation but don't ID the holes, unfortunately.

Is Wakonda a private course?
