Joel -

The tee marker closest in the picture is 229 and I paced it off to 241 ... a 258 marker would be in the practice bunker ...

Seeing as there is a new or expanded tee for Olympic 3, are there any other new tees in place at Olympic for next year's US Amateur?

Also, is there any consideration to constructing any new tees (if not already done) for the 2012 US Open?

It was my understanding that the 2d hole already went back about 20-25 yards, is that so?

Peter

Yes 2nd tee is being extended- under construction now- I'd guess 20-30 yards.

#5 is under construction currently and being extended a good 40 yards

New 2nd tee under construction ... this will make it a 435 yard or so par 4 ...

New 2nd tee view from 4th fairway ...

New 5th tee construction ...

View from new 5th tee, I stepped it off to be 505 yards ...

Mike, good pictures.  For those of you not familiar with Olympic that light brown material is not dirt, its sand which the club is built on.  Basically you can dig down 6 inches and you have all the sand you want.

I assumed they would build up the new tee on #2.  If they really wanted to do it right, such as what Oakmont did, they would have lowered the existing front tee but I assume they would have tohought it was too much a distraction.   I'm willing to bet that the work is being done in house, as opposed to using some professional shapers which has been a huge mistake Olympic has continually made over the last 10 years.

Played that course several years ago and watched parts of the '87 Open there and recall no. 3 as being tough enough as it was. The added distance to that green makes it a par 3.5.

I may have missed it but which architect is in charge of the renos at Olympic? The impression is clearly that they are trying to get the yardage back up so the USGA will pay attention and give them another US Open.

Bob:

They already have another Open - 2012.   The architect they are using is named Bill Love.

Joel,

I had missed the award of the 2012 Open.

I loved the course in that there are no water hazards, one fairway bunker and yet it has character. Also no houses.

All of us on the west coast will look forward to another Open at Olympic!
