Good news on Royal New Kent, preserving Strantz's legacy
« on: October 31, 2006, 06:59:28 PM »
I spoke with head pro Andy Bemis who said that the new super at Royal New Kent is doing a terrific job with the course conditioning.  Last summer they had some problems with the greens and he was concerned, but the new super has gotten everything ship shape.

Has anyone been out there recently?

I also heard that while they reclaimed alot of the fairways at Stonehouse that they had trouble with, there are still some issues in rough areas, but its better than the terrible problems of last year.  Anybody seen anything?

Last, we all should be excited that the Dixie Cup will be at three of Mike's courses - Cali, TB and Bulls Bay.  But I have a thought - Mike had many friends from Royal County Down and he said he built RCD to be a bit of a tribute to RCD and some other courses from across the pond and he and his crew and his friends form RCD would play cup style matches in a 2-1/2, 2-1/2, 2-1/2 format.  Two and a half hours to play 18, two and a half hours eating and drinking, then 2-1/2 more hours to play 18.  It should be more broad than just GCA, but it would be nice to resurrect that at RNK and maybe even Stonehouse in hnor of Mike.

Mike only gave us 8 solo efforts and one more reno at SCV (I count the redesign at MPCC as his since it looks nothing like what was there before.  Mike's legacy to the game is enormous, but also very fragile.  If we lose but a single course of his, it will be a great loss.  We should do everything we can to help out any of his courses however we can  - play them, promote them, help keep them preserved for their immense historical value.

Perhaps someone will be hired by the gentleman who owns Bandon Dunes to do a course out there as a tribute to Strantz.  If ever there was an architect whose legacy needs preserving and extending, I believe it is he.

I obviously have to get to RNK and Stonehouse to understand what is there.  I do heartily agree with Jay that every effort should be made to preserve Mike Strantz's fragile and concluded body of work way too soon.

I have no idea about the ownership of RNK and Stonehouse.  However, I take comfort and pay great respect to the Stewart family of Tobacco Road.  Having met Tony a couple of times, exchanged thoughts with him on IM here, and walked the course with him before the course even opened to hear his hopes and goals about the course, and having seen it over a period of years after, I have no doubt that the "Stewartship" (pun intended) is in great hands.  If any folks have the right ideas about preservation of the Strantz legacy, it is the Stewarts, I believe.

Jay, much of this preservation of the Strantz legacy involves the continuance of the Maverick Designs Inc., under Forrest Fezler.  I am sure that Mr. Fezler will add his own ideas as he should, but no doubt like any great company or brand, the founder's ideals are always upheld within the brand.

I played RNK about two months ago and the conditioning was fine. As good as I've ever seen at RNK but I've also seen it in occassionally rough condition in the past. It would be nice if they restored the full fairway to both sides of the creek on #9. The second and sixth hole are two of my favorites.

Fuzzy is doing a great job and I hope to report on some new projects of his soon in some prime areas of the country.  My favorite moment was at Bulls Bay after some college kids turned the 560 yd par-5 10th into a driver-5-iron affair, people were coming up with various solutions.  Fuzzy's response after all that was, "Well I think Mike would do ___."

BB is a shrine to his memory.  There are families there who also have shrines to Mike's memory.

Lets start thinking about some way to continue Mike's tourney at RNK...and yes, rush down there and tell us all what you think.

Jay, Is there a Mike Strantz society? If not, start one.

There should be one...I'll ask when I get down to SC...they'll know.  Or maybe Fuzzy will know...
