Mt. Washington 9-Holer
« on: September 13, 2006, 03:36:04 PM »
Does anyone have information regarding the 9-hole course at the Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, NH?  I'm wondering who the original designer was and who recently did revisions.  I understand from the hotel's website that the course was built in the 1890s and was recently renovated.

Several years ago, I played the course after my morning round on the main course was rained out.  There wasn't that much to it, but I really enjoyed my round--perhaps my first exposure to minimalism.  I loved that the whole course was essentially on the front lawn of the hotel--it was like playing on a private estate.

I believe that the nine hole course was built by the firm of Cornish and Silva. To my knowledge the 18 hole Ross course predates the nine holer by 80 years.

If there was a course on the property early on, my guess would be that it was behind the hotel.

Thanks Michael.

I guess I should have read the information on the hotel's website more carefully.  According to them, the 9-hole Mount Pleasant course was built in 1895 and "restored and upgraded" by Cornish and Silva in 1989--that was the "recent" revision.

This is also from the hotel's website:

"Home to many tournaments during the turn of the century, the Mount Pleasant Course became the focal point of the golfing community in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The original Mount Pleasant Course was visited by many golf celebrities, including U.S. Pro Golfer Gilbert Nicholls, Golf Course Designer Alex Findlay, British Golf Champions Harry Vardon and J.W. Taylor, and U.S. Open Golf Champion Willie Anderson."

Does anyone have information on the course prior to Cornish and Silva's work?

Tim:

The Cornish & Silva nine is in no way a "restoration" of anything; It was laid out as an entirely new golf course on (and around) the site of the old Mt Pleasant nine which, at the time of its construction, had been gone for at least 40 years.  I worked at the Mt. Wash for a number of years and can personally vouch for this.  There remain several mysteries about what holes were built where, and by whom, in and around Bretton Woods, but no record (beyond old scorecard yardages) ever existed regarding the Mt. Pleasant nine.

In case you're super curious, those yardages (in the layout's later years, I believe) were:

#1   208 yds   Par 4
#2   236 yds   Par 4
#3   520 yds   Par 5
#4   347 yds   Par 4
#5   355 yds   Par 4
#6   494 yds   Par 5
#7   191 yds   Par 3
#8   463 yds   Par 5
#9   232 yds   Par 4
