How could NGLA be improved?
« on: July 14, 2006, 09:28:09 AM »
With apologies if this has already been discussed ad naseum....but in taking a cue from Tom D's Sacred Cows post (and starting in order of the courses he randomly listed)...how could NGLA be improved?

Note that I've never seen the course and whatever little I know about the course I've read here -- which is mostly the good.   I suspect I, and every other regular golf Joe, knows MUCH more about Shinny than National, given the US Open.

Thanks to all for the open and honest discourse, this is how I'm learning.

I think the biggest improvement they could make is to make it public. :)

Not sure if this would be an improvement but if they were to build a Biarritz there, then... if a certain old thread ever came back to the top, the others would look like idiots and not me  :-[.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Move it to Ohio?  ;D Actually, blow it up!!! My grandfather was a member there for a few years before I was born and right after and it was all I ever heard about and now it is all I hear about on this site. Timing is everything in life!! Really, I am not bitter at all.

Green Fees could start at 2k and there wouldn't be a tee-time in sight for years!!

Matt, it's been awhile since anyone very familiar with the course discussed changes, but if you look back in the archives, probably about a year, you'll find some interesting exchanges. If I have time over the weekend, I'll try to dig up some for you.

My recollection is that most of the "improvements" involved finding room to lengthen holes. Tom Paul has always suggested the simplest and most logical change: printing 2 sets of scorecards with different pars.
Big drivers and hot balls are the product of golf course design that rewards the hit one far then hit one high strategy.  Shinny showed everyone how to take care of this whole technology dilemma. - Pat Brockwell, 6/24/04

It is obviously not practical now with the town/entrance road, but see George Bahto's book as to how #14 The Cape green sat out in Sebonac Creek. Today it would play 290, and would be a great Par 3.5.

And yes, they should have bought Bayberry years ago.

Keep letting Bill Salinetti slowly work on the course in consultation with George for historical accuracy.

I, on the other hand, wonder if they seem to be in too much of a hurry to make further changes and "restorations" to the course.

George Pazin,

TEPaul is an idiot.

Matt MacIver,

It can't be improved beyond minimal increments.

Tony Muldoon,

That's got to be one of the worst ideas I've ever heard.

Tom Doak,

You're not suggesting that NGLA should take the route taken by GCGC on their 12th hole are you ? ;D

NGLA has been headed in the right direction for a few years.

Sometimes timing and opportunity are everything and must be taken advantage of.  The time has and continues to be right.
