I will be in Dallas for business in May and wanted to know what the must plays are. It will be the week of the Colonial so unless I get a sponsors exemption, Colonial is out. How is Dallas Athletic Club? I have played Dallas National and may play there again.

Jim,

If you have had the opportunity to play Dallas National, then you probably have the means to play the other "exclusive" DFW metroplex courses.  That in mind, and assuming you want to stay relatively close to downtown Dallas, I would suggest trying to get on Preston Trails, Brook Hollow, Lakewood, or Northwood.  While a bit of a drive, Vaquero (north of Fort Worth) is getting rave reviews.  Those I know who have played it say the reviews don't tell even half the story.  If you can swing it, and need a fourth, give me a shout!!  Just kidding, sort of.

Regarding Dallas Athletic Club, it has been a while since I played out there.  But, they have recently renovated both their courses, and I have heard good things.  In fact, I am seriously considering joining there, so if you do play, I would appreciate your post-round thoughts.

Have a good time in Dallas.

-Jason

Jim:

When you exit DFW -- be sure to stop by and play Cowboys GC -- designed by Jeff Brauer. Well done layout and literally a short PW from the runways.

The land is gently rolling and there's plenty there that doesn't exist in so much of what calls itself golf in the Lone Star State.

One additional offer and I will leave it to anyone interested.Matt mentioned Cowboys.I have an office by the airport so I keep an annual membership at Cowboys, mostly for practice. It allows me to take guests for $18 food included, but not booze.I think it is a good layout, and definitely a different terain.Downside is social pressure to ride, although Lou has walked it.Its Bermuda greens so it actually plays better in the warmer months.I actually like it better than my club in the summer because the bent gets watered alot.

Matt -

Thanks for the suggestion. I am doing some stuff for Nike Golf and they are taking us to Cowboys that Saturday. That was the only course I have set up so far. We get to spend the day at the Nike R&D Center on Monday which should be interesting. I am leaning towards Vacquero right now if I can make that work.

If going Ft Worth direction, and if you have not played Shady Oaks,I would definitely do that before Vaquero.I understand the cookout at the turn appeals,as do the conditions, but from an architectural standpoint I have trouble seeing the merits.Of course, part of Shady's charm is the Hogan presence, which will be felt forever.

Daylight to dark at Tenison Park.  Wrap a little electrical tape around a Dr. Pepper bottle and give it a go in tribute to the Merry Mexican.  Who knows, you might run across the ghost of Titanic Thompson.

Not to thread jack but...

I'm driving up to the metroplex from Austin this Saturday.  My wife has a business conference in Westlake.  After perusing the archives and reading the DMN rankings, I have identified a few possibilities.

Cedarcrest -- How much Tillie is left?  Would it be an easy drop off the Interstate?

Indian Creek -- Looks like a neat, under the radar type course.  Is 30 mins reasonable between IC and Westlake?

Cowboys -- Tried to get rate information off the website, the first available time isn't until 2 pm.  Is it feasible to get on earlier as a single?

Again, any comments/suggestions are welcome if I'm missing something.  Fairly flexible in that I'm coming from Austin and can get dropped off or take the car after dropping my wife in Westlake.  If anyone would like to join, let me know.  Hoping to tee off around 9 or 10 if the logistics work out.  Thanks.

Jim,

I just got back from Dallas this weekend and played TPC at Craig Ranch and Vaquero.  I had fun playing both.  The condition of the course and greens were in great shape on both rounds.

Vaquero was only 10 minutes from the airport so I was able to tee off at 8:30am and still make my 1:30 flight.
