Cape Breton
Pine Needles
Shinnecock
Westward Ho! is the obvious choice, but I suspect I'm wrong

The individual hole sketch is by Stanley Thompson.

Isn't that an amazing photo of the 13th hole at Highlands Links, Ian? Amazing. That hole looks very different these day, principally due to tree growth.

Ian,

Thanks for putting these images up.  I always enjoy seeing what I may know compared to the experts on this DB.  The Highlands Links photo would have been my limit.

Kinda like my golf game come to think of it.  Not very good but I sure do enjoy it.  ;D

What hole is depicted in the Thompson sketch?

The second bunker has got to be the Cardinal at Prestwick surely? If not then definitely #4 at Royal North Devon.

Hey, I'm up to 500 posts now. Does that mean I get another star?

The Architects Quiz is back......

What course is this from?

Royal North Devon #4 now, from their web site.  Why are those people in the bunker?  Were the balls so much shorter back when, that they couldn't carry the 175 yard bunker.

WOW that was fast, but then again it usually is! I'll go deeper next time.

1. Tillinghast
This photo will be found in Philip Young's upcoming book called Tillinghast Creator of Golf Courses. I'm really looking forward to reading this book and have had the opportunity to go through the rough draft briefly.

2. Travis
I bet this was a repeat, I like the image too much. The image is from a publication called Golf and was from January 1896

3. Faldo
Nick from his recent book called Life Swings.

4. Cape Breton
This is found in the Nashwalk Review Volume 14/15. The publication has two gems:
-An essay on Thompson and Highland Links that is very well researched and well written by Ken Donovan
-the gem is a long interview with Geof Cornish that contains a lot of information hidden within the interview. It answered a number of pressing questions for me about the nature of the remaining plans for example. Most were as built.

5. Pine Needles
That was supposed to be the easy one and comes from the book Sandhills Classics

6. Shinnecock
Probably to easy, but it is the hell bunker from Shinnecock

7.Westward Ho!
Tom MacWood was correct.

8. Thompson
Ryan is right, it is indeed Stanley Thompson's sketch for the 8th hole at Sunningdale in London Ontario. The image can be found in the Guelph University archives in the Stanley Thompson collection. In fact, his entire sketch book for that project is in the archives, this is t6he only hole drawing and there are only a couple of green sketches. The majority of the book is measurements.

9. Baltusrol
I assumed the land might give it away, but I thought this would take time

10. Royal Co. Down
I jokingly named it the "Coombe" plan because it seems to reflect the course after his work and before the final changes made by Colt. Colt added the 4th and joined the 8th and 9th together to create the famous 9th hole. It shows the layout just prior to Colts changes of 1926.

Are a lot of Thompson's architectural materials archived at Guelph?

Bob here is a link to the web site at the University of Guelph.

http://www.lib.uoguelph.ca/resources/archives/cclaa/sts/index.htm

The collection has just been started by the Stanley Thompson Society. They have some items, but understandably the majority remains with the club. The whereabouts of the bulk of his drawings and models remains an irritating mystery. I have been looking for 10 years and have opened many a dusty box to find nothing architectural.

Sean,

"I'm a stupid......." I haven't laughed that hard for a while. Thanks for the correction.

Ian,

It really is a mystery... where are all of Thompson's drawings, letters, clay models, etc.? Weird.

Same re Vernon Macan? He's known to have written extensively, made detailed drawings and clay models of green designs... where are those treasures, too?

Sadly, they're probably gone.

Didn't you hear?  They've all been plastered into a wall at Dormie House!   ;)

Chris,

I can arrange to meet the current owner of Dormie House - I'm sure I can put that rumour to bed.

That is a new one to me though.

I'm going to try meet with the executor of his will soon - hopefully that will offer some new light on what happened to the stuff at Dormie House.

Ian,

Where did you find the RCD routing?

Do you have one from immediately after Colts changes?

Ian,

Before you start swinging that sledge hammer, I was kidding!  (I guess I should go back and add that winking smiley now.)  My comment was an allusion to the story that Barclay mentions in The Toronto Terror:

Quote
Stanley Thompson helped feed the rumour that Arthur Cutten had millions of dollars, illegally earned, stashed away in a wall of the clubhouse.  But he never came across a cent.

The very first issue of Dormie mentions the same story and notes that:

Quote
Apparently Thompson, hard up for cash, searched secretly with his sister, but found nothing.

It would be interesting to meet with his executor though!

Dan,

Its in the:
Royal County Down Golf Club
The first century.

Excellent little book on the history of the club by McCaw and Henerson 1988

Parker, .....

I heard about the hidden securities, it's mentioned in the 1949 Saturday Evening Post article on Thompson, but the models caught my interest. Remember Arthur Cutten was charges - but aquited on securities fraud - there seems to be a lot of missing money. :)

Ian,

I thought I'd read the story somewhere else before.  I have an original copy of that issue of the Saturday Evening Post that I got on eBay.  One of the few comprehensive stories about Thompson that was written while he was still alive...
