Rolling back the game mind
« on: February 21, 2006, 09:05:21 AM »
Assuming the USGA will be re-defining the ball specs, is this an example of a continuation of man's game mind, or is it a rollback of that predisposition?

Oh enigmatic one.  Is a "game mind" anything like a "game face?"  Or is it possibly more (or even less) superficial?

After watching that fiery Italian skater the last couple of nights, it's my understanding that the IOC is meeting right now to redefine "game face".

So Rihc, it has nothing whatesoever to do with game mind at this moment in time.

If the Italian woman skater was a bunker, she'd be what kind of a bunker? Certainly nobodies Nursemaid and clearly not your typical Mr's. Grundy.

Obviously, a Mackenzie bunker--highly coiffeuered and filligreed, but reverting back to genotype with the slightest provocation of nature.  Fiery, but doomed to an old age of recriminations and chopping the tomatoes for the evening ragu.....

I'm guessing that old T.S.E. had this thread in mind when he wrote:

.... Words strain,
Crack and sometimes break, under the burden,
Under the tension, slip, slide, perish,
Decay with imprecision, will not stay in place,
Will not stay still.

 ;)

But don't let me interrupt.

OK Adam, I'm trying here but a clue as to what "game mind" is would help considerably.

On the surface my answer might be as easy as yes.

Adam,
Hit the fold button and get more sleep. The USGA is gaming us into believing they're the bastion of sport. They have as much credence as the IOC.
If you ask questions like this on the cruise you'll win hands down because the opposition will be stupefied.

Sully, The reference is to Behr's distinction between the sport of golf and the game mind. Ya know, the wrong turn American golf has taken us?  Not that chineese guy tse.

Sorry to be dense.  Is this the thing about golf being like hunting as opposed to like a game with defined parameters like (I cannot recall the answer).

Peter, As I understand it and to paraphrase one of Max's opinion's;  golf's direction, visa vie GCA, was following a path that he considered to be less of a sport, more of a game. IMO, the "game mind" emphasized through golf course architecture is represented with the very penal nature of what most everyone sees and knows as a golf course. I doubt even Max's courses resemble his own principles. Thats' how much the GM has taken over, all of us.
Honestly Peter, I don't know why I had this question in my head, that's why I asked. Maybe it was a dig on the future course of events? Possibly lowering the ability to progress naturally,(which is also part of nature) curtailing what no one has had the audacity to do before, could be a function of the GM in all of us, gee aye?
I still want to know who this chineese guy is. Sounds like a real book burner.

I found the Behr quote. It is the last one in Geoff's Lines of Charm (p172).

"The question before the golfers of the world is as plain as a pike-staff. Are they going to be sportsmen and accept a ball that requires skill to propel, or, in their infantile worship of mere distance, are they going to continue to be downright game-hogs?"
