Architecture Survey
« on: December 17, 2005, 07:02:30 AM »
I was curious to know how much English club golfers knew about golf course architecture, in the UK and overseas, so I put together a few questions and gave them to friends.  They, in turn, gave copies to their fourball when they returned to the bar and got them to fill in a survey without the use of reference books and without consulting each other.  I think you'd be surprised at some of the answers and their spread.  These surveys were carried out at some pretty upper-class clubs.  Feel free to print it off and spring it on your friends if you wish.  I'll give you the results next week.  I assume you all know the answers, but feel free to e-mail me privately if anything has slipped your mind!

GOLF COURSE ARCHITECTURE QUIZ

Thanks for reconfiguring this.  I have 20 completed surveys back and not everybody answered every question, so they don't always add up to 20.  These, however, are the spread of answers.  I think it proves (if a sample of 20 is admissable) that we are not very architecturally knowledgeable in this country and probably explains why there are so few sales of books about architecture here.

14 Old Head

16 The Island
17 Royal Dublin
18 Adare Manor Resort
19 Tralee
20 Carton House Montgomerie.

Let me get this straight - County Down and Portrush did not finish in the top 10? Portmarnock and Ballybunion finished 4/5 to the K Club, European Club and Mt Joliet?

Sounds like another wonderful rankings result. :)

Very fun quiz, Mark. I think I did moderately well as a American fairly new (18 months or so) to the study of architecture. My score was 23 correct out of 30, is that about average?

You tripped me up with Valderrama (Q15) which I instantly attributed to Seve, although once I saw the answers I recalled "knowing" that it was an RTJ course.

Then I missed three in a row (Q17-Q19) because I know nothing of modern European courses. I just picked Hawtree at random for all three, which I see someone else seemed to do as well.

In a case of karmic payback, I then failed to pick Hawtree for the question (Q27) to which he was the correct answer. I blind guessed Donald Steel.

I had no idea what to answer for the South America item (Q28) and it looks like most others missed that one too.

Finally, another excellent item (Q29) on which I narrowed it down to Donald Ross and Alister MacKenzie, choosing Ross even though I knew that the number of championships was way too high. Everything except the British-born part screamed RTJ but I've never heard the fact that he wasn't American-born.

So I guess I need to brush up on my RTJ trivia and maybe take a peek at the European PGA Tour courses to be better educated, at least per this little survey. Very nice.

I managed to get all bar 4 right. I would still question whether or not Taylor and Vardon were true archies like Braid but will bow to your superior knowledge Mark.

I took the liberty of posting the quiz on a greenkeepers website and have got a bit of abuse back. It would appear some are interpreting it as an attack on their interlect but most really enjoyed it.

I gave it to a couple of our club members and our proshop staff and the best they can do is get about 10 right. When you consider that the muliple choice element of the quiz would result in even a monkey getting about 5 right!!

By the way Mark, sorry I messed up the numbering when I got to number 9. There are 31 questions in all, not 30.

Also, you've missed out the answer to question 23 but we all know that's Hotchkin.

St Mellion isn't a very popular course in England, it's off the beaten track and isn't on TV anymore.  But the quiz result just goes to show that even across the pond, his name eclipses even the most famous of designers.

I think Mackenzie is the most famous designer in GB&I with Braid and Colt next (plus Old Tom).  Everyone else is virtually anonymous.
