U.S. Am Qualifier at Camargo
« on: August 03, 2005, 08:52:54 PM »
The course as usually was in awesome shape with a nice brown tint to the greens. They've had extremely hot weather the past month in cinci so the greens weren't as firm as the Sup would have liked but they were still pretty firm. Shots from the fairway took a big hop and stoped or just released a few feet and from the rough it was kind of hard to control your ball many times rolling through the green. Fairways were really firm and the pin placements were brutal. There was two or three scores in the morning round under par and same in the afternoon. Unfortunately I did not play my best like I did in the practice round but played the par 3's 2 under for the 36 holes and birdied the Redan and Biarritz holes. The more and more I play the course I fall in love with it a little more. The gently rolling hills with not one hole standing out yet all of them seem to be my favorite. I love the angles he creates with the fairways forcing you to play draws and fades to hit them. I have some really nice pictures from the practice round if someone would post them I"ve tried posting pics numorous times but fail miserably.

Lawrence,

Do they hold a US Amateur qualifier every year at Camargo? I've heard nothing but good things about the course, and would like to make the trip down there next year.

They've held it there the last 5 years I know but I'm pretty sure they hold it there every year. I've gone now 3 times and its really a treat.

They've held it there for a long, long time.  It used to be 18 at Camargo and 18 at Terrace Park, a nearby club.  For the past five years or so it's been all 36 at Camargo.

What qualified this year?  Scores have been really low there the past few years.

in 2002 no one shot under par greens rock hard and stimped around 13 to 14 it was madness. but 03 04 the scores were really low due to soft conditions. This year only two guys shot under par and the number was 2 under qualified so the course showed some teeth.

The Am. qualifier has been at Camargo for many years. IN recent times the site has been over-subscribed, so the Cinci. Golf Association changed from the Camargo / Terrace Park format to two separate qualifiers, Camargo and the Traditions GC in No. Kentucky.

Camargo is a very private club and hosts very few outside events. The Am. qualifier has always been its "give back."

The Camargo qualifier has, in recent years, been scheduled (conincidentally) during a one-week "break" in the amateur golf tournamnent "circuit." Thus, many fine players on their way to/from the North and South, the Eastern, the Sunnehanna, etc. have made Camargo their Am. qualifying choice. Particularly, a large contingent of Australians seem to have made it their stop. Two years ago eventual Am. champ Nick Flanagan qualified out of Camargo.

This year, due to the Open at Pinehurst, the North and South dates were moved. Thus, Camargo did not have the large contingent of 'outsiders." The field was only 54 players. Therefore, scores were higher than in recent years.

There is talk about moving the date a week earlier next year.

Camargo is terrific and everyone should get to play there once. What better time than in the US Amateur qualifier? Hope to see you there next year.
