An early lead...
« on: July 14, 2005, 06:29:50 AM »
I get up at 6:30 to see the leaderboard only to see Tiger at 6 under after eleven holes and a three shot lead!

Can this tournament be already over?

If he putts well, then the others are playing for second.

oooo this is going to be good.  No, this toon-a-mint isn't over!  I just heard IBF say the greens are running at 10.5, but I sure am having a hard time believing that the way the ball is coming up short quickly on many putts.  At best, I'd believe they are running about that in places, while other places they are running much slower and bumpier.  And, I just laughed out loud to see Monty have one run on the firm fairways through the FW into the Burn.  He only got about a 100 yards of roll out.  That guy ought to know better than that, or is he a psuedo Scot? ::)

this place is a pitch and putt for Woods.......

Well then it is a pitch-and-putt for most of the field.

2 shots on Thursday?  Over?  Hardly.

What is the bet?  Are you taking Woods and giving me the field?  I'm all over that.

I've got uncashed winnings from the infamous Wie bet!

Don:

I'm not betting 10k on this because I always want wagers to be about something other than the money, even though the presence of something of value is needed to make sure that someone is putting their money where their mouth is.

I'm sure you can find a way better bet for $10k than even odds on Woods after round one.

Yannick,

si.com agrees with you that the Open is over. Here is the headline from their Web site:

Tiger wins British Open!
So what if three rounds still remain -- it's a done deal

actually Woods is about even odds right now to win.........on offshore books (100 to win 127)......11/10 at Ladbrokes.........

you could have goosen and singh at 12-1 to win right now....

I think Woods is a lock.......you can see it in his eyes!

And from the Van Sickle (SI) article:

"Tiger is the all-time king of the front-runners. He's 8-8 when he's leading or tied for the lead after 18 holes, 20-6 when leading or tied after 36 holes and 31-3 when leading or tied after 54 holes."

That 8-8 part includes of course, the Y2K Opens.

If the wind kicks up I wouldn't expect Tiger to run away with it.  While wind obviously makes it tougher for everybody, Tiger seems to be a guy who struggles with the wind more than other pros.

A good point.

Tiger got to play early in the morning today.. The time of day when he normally has his better rounds..  The greens are in better shape and there was little to no wind. (i saw a stat that said in the morning, it was 5-10mph and by the time phil teed off it was gusting to 25+).
Tomorrow he'll have to play with the wind and possibly rain.  If so, I could see him coming back a little bit.
