The return of Montauk Downs ...
« on: July 14, 2005, 08:31:29 PM »
Hats off to the NY State Parks system for their dedicated effort in taking to another level the sheer qualities of Montauk Downs -- the gem of a state park at the far end of Long Island. I had the pleasure in playing the course during a recent East End visit and frankly was quite skeptical given my previous visit where one needed a full shoulder turn to make a six-foot putt!

The course is listed as a design by Trent Jones but it was really the handiwork of his son Rees. The course is far removed from the type of product one sees with the other Rees Jones courses in the neighborhood -- Atlantic & The Bridge.

Years back Montauk played firm and fast but overtime the fairways became like hayfields as grass was not cut or when it was in a haphazard fashion.

Montauk will be stretched out to just over 7,000 yards but it's the positioning of the greens -- some above and others below -- that will thrwart anything but superior shotmaking.

Time is short for now but I will say this -- there's no better bargain on the East End for public players than Montauk Downs and word I heard is that future improvements are just around the corner. Without question -- one of the top 100 public courses in the USA from the ones I have played.

Matt,

You better start making some more time and do your due diligence. Sag Harbor Golf Course is $18 for summer weekend golf in The Hamptons with a beautiful view of Peconic Bay. I think it is time to stop with this charade of being a champion for the public golfer. Montauk was a private club that went into default and was taken over by the state. It is time for you to start plaaaaaying some real public golf. ;)

Mike S:

Charade?

Glad you can lecture me about public golf when you are out playing Sand Hills and the like. I guess someone has to do the heavy lifting. ::)

I've played more public golf than a host of people on this site and frankly the existing Montauk Downs was private for only a short period of time -- ditto Hominy Hill in Monmouth County, NJ. They are leigtimate public courses owned by the taxpayers now.

The Sweeney rule on public golf is that it's only public golf if you say so.

I play regularly at my host club in Passaic County which grows grass more by accident than design.

You must have been out in the sun toooooooo long Mike because the charade you bark about is closer to your side of the aisle than mine.

I think we can all rejoice in the fact that we finally have found a course where it is appropriate for Rees Jones to work on. :)
