Quintero's 15th Rees got it!
« on: April 24, 2005, 10:35:45 AM »

While this picture is slightly right of where we golfed the hole, and the green's cant is not as obvious, I must say how refreshing it was to experience both the centerline nature of the fairway bunker, and seeing the green come down, at grade, off the hillside to the right.

From the tees we golfed, the carry over the fairway bunker was 257 yds. Not really doable that day, so the options then presented themselves. Stay short, or go right. But not too far right.

Any thoughts?

unless you're joking...

I am playing golf, I don't golf

Im sorry if some of the hoy poloy dont' agree, but I was shown long ago, by someone i respected, the use of the word play, is not proper.

One plays a game, and if Max Behr knew anything, he knew this is a sport.

Now, I play in tournaments because that's a game.

I am serious.

Exactly Voytek!

Someone I respect and met from this DG showed me the light on another matter, that I will faithfully follow until the day I die. The proper thing to do is to remove one's hat when entering the clubhouse.

Does one hunt, or play hunting?

Mountain climb or Play climbing?

Yet people play baseball, football and soccer.  These are all games and only esoterically known as sports.

Who would play a game you can't win?

It's sport.

Adam, I am not nearly as high on this course as you are. However I only remember one really Reesed up hole. I think it was the 4th with containment mounding down both sides of the fairway along with his horrid bunkering. I like the one major down hill par 3and feel it is very good, but 3 of them with two being the same hole in different directions is too much. I think he did a good job of using the few natural green sites he had. I liked the 5th and 7th holes as well. They were good shortish par 4's boxing the big downhill 6th being a par 3. I liked the 8th which is a good par 5. I think he did a good job overall with a poor piece of land.

I have to agree with Tiger, I played here 2 years ago and can't even remember this hole which is indicitive of this course.  By the time you get to the 15th, its generally all the same or you are just trying to finish.

El Tigre,

I thought you said you liked Spyglass Hiil.... it has three distinctive downhill par threes.

I have played Quintero twice. Here is Rees Jonse's description of the hole:

Hole 15
Rees Jones calls this one of the great sleeper holes at Quintero. On this short par 4, a solid tee shot with many clubs will be rewarded with a short iron to a crafty, elevated green.

Yardage
Black    379    Copper    321
Gold    358    Jade    284
Silver    339

Handicap    Men/Ladies    14/12
Par    Men/Ladies    4/4

For all those who missed it, this thread was supposed to be about the 15th hole. Not the course. I'm trying to be more Ran-like, rather than rant like. SOSUEME

Bill, While that bunker is on left side of the fairway, it is directly in-line with the green. That, combined with the green at hillock grade, was impressive.

The conditioning was the best we saw in the desert.

Well, then, how exactly do I golf something?

Your argument doesn't stand against grammar or logic.

There is no action "to golf," and if you define it as the "act of PLAYING golf," then your argument is recursive and therfore false.

Golf is a noun, not a verb.

 ;D ;)

You play baseball, football, and soccer... all are sports.

You don't go baseballing or soccering or footballing...

You don't play golfing either...

Play hunting and play climbing is an improper analogue.

Bob that is the weakness of Spyglass to me. However the ones there have more diveristy. Also the 5th is an all world par 3 as well. I was pointing out one weakness of this course without beating it up for they did a good job with a poor piece of land.

Kyle- It's obvious to me golf doesn't even fit into grammatical models, let alone an economic one.

You say what you want, I'll stay with what i was taught by an elder who thought it pertinent.

A river and a ditch.

Hehe Adam,

Fair enough... just is one of my pet peeves (very jokingly, my friends do it on purpose to tick me off since I'll always correct them).

Back on topic, I do like the hole, at least by the picture and description you posted. What's the elevation difference from tee to landing area and from landing area to green. Also, is the hole as cramped as the picture would indicate? Seems tight.

Kyle- The hole is not as narrow as the pic would indicate. It is not wide though.

The hole has a drop of maybe 20 feet to the fairway and almost that same distance back up to the green.

All of the left side is natural. Balls do not however bound back into play if you miss left. I know.
