Do you think......

......Golfclubatlas.com and its participants and contributors could or should be fairly described as "anti-authority"?

I see an awful lot of followers and belt knotchers..If this site was what it sometimes pretends to be people would be out in fields with a mower, two clubs and a ball making their own architecture..

Followers and belt knotchers of what John B? The thing I notice more and more is the contributors and participants on here seem to feel that anyone with any authority, whether its at clubs, associations, USGA, whatever, is either guilty of egoism or are complete idiots. Why is that?

"no, this is a very reactionary group by the strictist definition and that would make it conservative..... and the suggestion a bit oxymoronic..but then again, "Catholic" means "Of broad or liberal scope; comprehensive"  so go figure.... "

redanman:

That is a fascinating statement---truly it is and I feel a most apropos desciption of this group. I'm shocked---is that really you who thought of that? Or was it Rene? Come on, be honest with me---I can't imagine a thought that interesting actually came from you all by yourself!   ;)

I look at it as a group who loves the many virtues and principles of classical design, but I don't think we should thumb our nose at the popular modern architects, because we might not like everything they do but many of them will have some influence on the future of architecture and some of their current work is worth studying and even playing.

Example: Fazio may have gone too far with his emphasis on creating beauty, but I think to some extent that will have a lasting impact -- and what's wrong with a pretty girl that has a depth of character?

TEPaul,

Are you suggesting an "accepting" "formulaic" response to all issues ?

I think this group is well divided into the minimalist crowd and the others, with the mininalists dominating.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

It depends on who or what is the authority.

More than half of this forum's participants would walk off a cliff if Doak or Coore demanded it.

TEPaul,

That's simply not true.  I only think that about those with authority in the USGA ;)

"TEPaul,

Patrick:

I am not suggesting that, only that it might be wiser to look at the issue instead of first automatically questioning the authority or motive of the one who brought it up.

rgkeller:

What's "authoritarian" about Doak or Coore & Crenshaw?

"TEPaul,

DougS:

I know---it's obvious. You don't even need to mention it! At this point the USGA could probably legislate the rollback of tee shots on tour 50 yards and this crew on here would find some way to call them egoistic idiots for even proposing such a thing!  ;)

Tom - I would argue that those who feel the sport is in some sort of dark age, due to the distance the ball can go, are extremely anti-authority.

Those who feel the price to golf, at supposedly public places, is too expensive, and that expense is increased by some authoruity who needs to fill his bottomline, so he/she can hire more and more vice-presidents, are also extremely anti-authority.

If you mean... as it relates to the shot demands placed on the golfer throughout the round, I'd agree... dis that establishment.

I think this group is primarily made up of individuals who love the game, and are also fairly passionalte with regards their opinions on golf course architecture.

I sometimes think some on the site forget they are just that...opinions..but I do not consider many of us as anti establishment rebels.
I think quite a number are of us somewhat reluctant to be too supportive of the USGA and beleive that the governing body  sometimes takes a too much of a " sit on the fence" outlook to some issues......technology for example...but that I think is becasuse we love the tradition of the game rather than being rebelious.

I think generally that this is a group who is pretty traditional...reactionary to use Bill V's term, and who sees golf as a wonderfully simple game that is under attack from multiple quarters and sees those who we expect to protect the game operating either in collusion with the antagonists or as wimpy apologists and we're a little pissed.

I mean, who really wants to see a stretched out, pumped up, shorhorned to 7,000+ yards, grandpa's beard on bunkers Merion out there trying to shake her tush for the USGA's inspection and approval?   ::)

The game used to have more class than this.

Big money coming into golf has not been without a major cost.

To be honest with you Mike I think there's something pecularly sexy about watching 93 year old great grandma Merion East shaking her tush in front of some of these young 320 yard bombers in the US-Am who are too young to remember her grand-son!

Tom,

I just had a very disturbing visual.

You're a sick, sick man.  ;D
