In Winter, Our Thoughts Turn To...
« on: February 06, 2004, 10:59:10 AM »
...The Masters, naturally!!! ;D

I have the extreme good fortune of being able to attend this year's tuna-mint, and was wondering who else from the treehouse might be either attending or in the area.

Our itinerary is as follows:

My buddy Greg and I will be flying in to Atlanta on April 7th, trying to catch a Braves game that evening, and staying overnight in Atlanta.  On Thursday morning, we intend to play golf either in the Atlanta area or someplace on the way towards Augusta, then dinner in/near Augusta Thursday.

We are staying over in Aiken, SC on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and are attending the tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  We also intend to play at least one other round of golf while over that way...either very early on Friday or Saturday, or possibly later on Friday.

If anyone is interested in an impromptu (unsanctioned) GCA get-together...either on the Augusta grounds or elsewhere, please respond here or Email or private message...would love the chance to meet some of the faithful in here!

You are definitely in for a treat.  My humble opinion is Friday is the best day to go.  The cut has not been established, it is relatively uncrowded and it is a good time to walk the course without fighting the crowds.  You get to see former champions play.  And the souvenir stores have not been picked over yet.

Saturday is not a bad day.  The cut has been made and the crowd starts to pick up.  I just don't like Sunday.  I know there are quite a few think that it is the only time to go.  I just feel like you miss alot because if you want to see some good action, you have to go early and stay in one place all day.  I would rather watch it on the tube.  I've never been there on Sunday, though.  But people I've talked with say that Sunday is special.

We were there in 2000 for Vijay's victory, and you are pretty correct with your assessment of the days...Friday is great because you can see the whole field play.  Saturday is solid because it is "moving day", and we just figured since we are already there we'd stay and watch as much of Sunday as we can.  Our flights out of Atlanta are not until 8:00pm...so we will just miss part of the end, which is fine.

I'm green with envy.  I've tried for practice tickets for 7 years now without a bite..  Maybe #8 will be the one!

Have a great time!

My buddy has been trying for 20 years and never heard a word. This year he got a letter a few months ago out of the blue. I was happy with the outcome. ;D

The 2 round course selection was mine, but I got no arguments.

Evan,
If your plan is to leave Atlanta and play on the way to Augusta on Thursday, I think you're describing Cuscowilla, which halfway.  If you have a better plan than that, its a helluva plan!

A.G...you are correct, sir!

If we cannot get out at someplace like East Lake, Peachtree, or AAC then we will "bite the bullet" and play Cuscowilla on the way over.

Thoughts?

Evan,
Wow! What a list!  I've walked ACC and East Lake, but I don't even know anybody who has played at Peachtree.  Obviously, if you could get on at East Lake or Peachtree, it would be hard to pass those up, even for Cuscowilla.  I believe, though, that between ACC and Cuscowilla, I might lean toward the latter.  I'd love to hear others from the area weigh in on those choices.

If you CAN get on at Peachtree, you are one well-connected dude.

Just bringing this topic back up to the top to see if anyone from the treehouse will be around Augusta next weekend...would love to at least say "HELLO!" in person and maybe walk a few holes, have a sandwich, or whatever.

Please get in touch!  Regards.

if it's a choice between East Lake and Cuscowilla, and you've already walked East Lake, then I would definitely recommend Cuscowilla.  I loved East Lake too, but Cuscowilla is a special golf course.  There were some echoes of Cuscowilla at Rustic Canyon last weekend, not the same but the large, rejecting greens complexes have a lot in common.  Planning for approach angles is everything.
