I would call that "damning with faint praise."  Van Sickle's much better when he is nasty.  I don't think he does "enthusiastic" very well.

David,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Gary sure used a lot of words to hardly say anything. I don't know what 2 courses he thinks are better than Barona, I assume Torrey Pines South is one. Any ideas which is the other.
Thanks for the Scotland travel info you sent, I look forward to my trip.

Ed,

I didn't see any mention in the article that he calls Barona the 3rd best in the area.  His only mention of it's worth compared to others in the area was thus:

"My conclusion is that the San Diego area now has another must-play track in the rotation with the two public courses at Torrey Pines (best scenery next to Pebble Beach) and La Costa."

I wonder if he's ever played Maderas.

Scott, isn't Maderas private?

I think he only intended to talk about public courses.

Maderas is public (I played there in April, 2001).   The first King's Putter had a group play there on one of the days.

I played on the Kings Putter day, I just thought that it was private and the Neil had arranged it for us.

Scott,
I could be wrong, but I think its actually semi-private, on its way to being exclusively private.

Tommy's correct, some memberships have been sold, but it appears that it will be several more years before they go completely private.

Scott, Just checked, it is in fact Semi-private, and they do hope to go completely private. When they do, they have plans to increase the clubhouse size to 35,ooo sq. ft.

Scott,
On the opening screen Gary calls it the third must play course in the area. Perhaps I misinterpreted.
Considering Barona is one of the best modern courses I have played, I would have thought he would have more to say about the course.

Ed,

I was just looking at the article (still had it up), so I missed that part. Yes, that doesn't jibe with his previous mention "with the two public courses at Torrey Pines (best scenery next to Pebble Beach) and La Costa".  Both Torrey and La Costa have 2 courses, which makes 5 total.  Maybe he was counting Torrey and La Costa as one complex each, or just South and the La Costa tournament course (if it's a composite).

And to the rest of you, semi-private falls under the 'public' umbrella, just like the 3 resort courses he mentions, Barona, and the pair at La Costa.   ::)  Torrey's pair are the only two truly 'public' ones mentioned, and they're the hardest ones to get on.
