Ron Whitten's review of Pete Dye Golf Club
« on: March 01, 2004, 04:29:03 PM »
This course was recently discussed amidst the Golfweek rankings threads, whether or not it's worthy of it's lofty ranking.   Ron Whitten just posted his review of it, his thoughts seem to echo those of Tom Doak in his Confidential Guide.... check it out, click on the link below and the article is at the top....

It will indeed be interesting to see the Nationwide players have a go at it in the new event there this year.  I hope the course is setup as difficult as it can be, the players will have all they can handle.

Does this guy write in code? I have no sense of what it's like. I'm more intrigued because I'm not intrigued.

I have played it and have no sense of what it is from that description. Adam, if you can get on, play it, you will not regret it.

Hopefully the Nationwide tournament will help them out some.

I know Mr. Whitten's writing is not held in high regard by many on this site, but I found his discussion of the Pete Dye Club to be quite interesting.
I've read Pete's book, but it has been some time, so I found Whitten's update and review of this strange project to be helpful.
Sometimes I think some on GCA should step back and realize that stories like Whitten's review of PDC are meant for a broad audience and not aimed specifically at the types of people who spend time on a posting board about golf course architecture.

I would agree this is worth the ride from Pittsburgh.  I have only played it once but found it to be a challenge.  The 10th hole has a very large man made water fall which was out of place and the green complex at #17 should be blown up.  Otherwise it was great fun. #2 and #18 are very tough fours.

Mr. Thompson- I am a wide audience, all by myself. But, seriously, I am not well read when it comes to magazine articles. But, that doesn't mean someone with the title "architecure editor" should fail to capitvate me. Maybe captivate is too strong. But c'mon, after his review of the rawls course, it is evident that this author uses his column for more than what it is intended. Relaying personal jokes or attacks.
