Are you a rater or not...
« on: March 02, 2004, 03:03:59 PM »
I am amazed why people want to keep it a secret that they are a rater for either Golfweek, Golf Digest, Golf Magazine or the BBGE....come out of the closet people...or are you scared of the raterphobes.

Me first....I don't rate for the BBGE but I do compile the results.

I am looking for additional panelists for the BBGE and am interested in people who may be qualified that do not currently sit on or wish to leave one of the other of the big four..

JakaB:  I'm a course rating panelist for Golf Digest magazine and I have never made a secret of it, can't see why I would, nobody ever told me this was part of the deal and I can't see anywhere that it says to be secretive...

If I get booted off, which is distinctly possible for sure, I would be honored to join BBGE.

I doubt there will be many replies to this thread!

No, I am not a rater ...

And, I have not read much GCA in the past 4-days, so what is BBGE?  (or will you have to kill me after you tell me?)

I'm not.

I wouldn't mind being a rater (not a "ranker").  And I'll be honest and admit that part of the reason would be the free green fees and the events!

Why the hell would anyone feel compelled to respond to this discussion.  I don't recall ever observing raters hiding their affiliations.  All you need do is look up old posts.

Perhaps Ran should compile this list and put it in a separate area of the site along with the next 50, in my opinion and course reviews?  ::)

Barney-  What are you proposing to do with this information?

Maybe it's because I have been gone for awhile, but one question strikes me: when did being a rater become something similar to the scarlet letter?

You attended the event at Bandon/Pacific Dunes and even got to visit/play the mystical area north of the resort.

I hope you too came away with all the goodies and I hope you won't reveal the secret handshake in case you happened to see some raters communicating that way.

PS- I think you would be among the best raters possible if anyone cared to ask you to join a panel.

GC:  good point.  As for me, I am strangely compelled to reply to ANY question JakaB asks... just cuz I do like the guy.

I wonder if there is a Scarlet R, Andrew.  Maybe.....

I'm one! And it's all because I live in a region where nobody else is. I'm not from here, yet I've been called regionally biased. If anything, I am still a Chicagoan, yet I abhorr most of what golf course architecture DID there.

If a course would try (only one has) to kiss my ass for a rating, It would likely backfire. But I am new at this and willing to learn. Maybe a carreer in politcs would be helpful? or better yet, AUTHOR.

The BBGE (Barney Betterment of Golf Endowment) is an organization started to promote the improvement of golf through others for everyone.   We are not interested in comps for ourselves...we are interested increased access for others...access to great books like Geoff's and access to great courses average golfers can either not afford or gain access too.   Nomination to the BBGE panel is simple....it takes one unselfish act of kindness to another golfer that improves the game.   Scott Burroughs is a shinning example through his AOTD's and should serve our organization proudly.   We currently offer grants for purchasing books, paying greenfees and attending outings.....The future is bright for golf and the BBGE is looking for raters and FOB's to keep the candle burning.

Geoffrey,

It is not obvious to most of us who are raters and who are not...I am excited already at the excellent people I would have already thought to be raters that may fill the qualifications of the BBGE.   I find it rude for me to ask people personal information about themselves and was hoping to see more imput.....I may reconsider the whole idea of a panel for the BBGE if it would put any of its members in a postion where they are ashamed in our mission to the point they would not want to admit in an open forum their affiliation...

btw...why do you think Paul Turner would be good for our panel..

Read Paul's posts.

Look at the photos he uncovers that show an appreciation for the topography, hazards and settings of  H. Colt architecture.

Play a few rounds of golf with him

Talk with him about golf courses and architecture.

Goeffry,

I like the idea of knowing who is or isn't a rater. The info may not be used for anything, but neither is the info in "Best 19th Hole" or "Best Locker Room" threads. This at least helps me know people a little better.

I'm a course rater for the WPGA (USGA Course Ratings that is).

Oh and I do rate for the one weekly magazine that does ratings.

When you get right down to it, anyone who expresses an opinion about a course on this site is a rater - they just don't necessarily get lumped in and compiled with the others for publication.

My experience with the various members of the site who are raters has been hugely positive.

That's right, amen brother - I believe you and I are the only REAL Course Raters of the regular participants here.  We help the game, so we get the capital letters.  NCGA Course Rater here, praise the golf gods.

The fact we're also both the kind with the lower case, well... I don't know what that says.

I can't wait until mid-April when Golf Digest's "Places-to-Play" star ratings come out (May issue).  They're done by readers and subscribers voting for courses they've played.  That way we can beat up on the general golfing public!  That should be fun!! :D 8)
