new course in sunland CA?
« on: March 02, 2004, 01:08:44 PM »
Just wondering if anyone knows what the new course in sunland is. Who designed it and such. It is going in looks like in a river bed waste area.

Unless Brian's talking about other Sunlands, there is one in SoCal - San Fernando Valley, near Pacoima/Sylmar - 210 freeway cuts through it going from north part of valley to Pasadena... There's a HUGE dry riverbed area there, which I always though had golf course potential if one wanted to risk 100-year flood issues.  I had no idea a course was actually being planned there... I am very curious to hear more about this myself.  My parents live about 5 miles from there.

Thanks, Joe.  Plan looks pretty darn interesting.... lots of connected fairways, pretty neat looking.  Anything else you can tell us about this course?  Anyone?  Beuller?  Bueller?  Fry?

I believe it had a different name once, "Canyon Trails".
Supposedly, 400K yards of earth moved around.

It seems the design shows 2 9th greens and it does "return" if that means going back to the clubhouse.

It's a pretty drawing.  I wonder if the connected fairways will be maintained after a few years.  These connections don't seem to add to play and will simply require a bit more water than scrub would.

I believe the proximity to the freeway will hurt the appeal of play.

Hell, in the summertime with the smog that occurs in that area, you won't even see the freeway.

Joe - the pic was so small, I got the 9 green wrong.. so I deleted my reference to non-returning #9.

So it's right there near the 210?  Damn it wasn't that long ago I drove by there, didn't even see it.  Might have been night-time.

Thanks for all the info, in any case!

And yes, smog does tend to collect there.   :'(

Yes it is right next to the highway 210. It looks really nice from the highway. if you look closely on the map you can see the roads that are on the course. on the left is the entrance road. then the highway. thanks for the info.

The SCGA lists Angeles National as being a private course but I don't think it will be.  It is supposed to be open this spring and will be hosting a CGA Amateur Qualifier on May 10.

I saw some people playing the course last week and other people have told me that they saw golfers on the course as well but when I call their phone number all I get is a recording.

Looking at the course map hole #13 looks almost exactly like #10 at Rustic.

Looking at the course map, #13 appears to combine characteristics of #10 and #13 at Rustic.  Drive to centerline tiny trap, 2nd with longish waste & bunker right.  It's very different at the finish though with a tiny unbunkered green.

It looks like there's a significant danger point at #7 tee.  It's very exposed to balls long on #6 and left from the tee on #8.

#16 is a downhill par 5 that's going to be a simple but interesting hole.

The course looks very walkable with very few long jaunts green to tee.

Here's a link to a better map:
