Aerial of the Day #356 - 18 Jun 2003
« on: June 18, 2003, 06:24:53 AM »
Definitely interesting-looking.  Bunkers galore.  Par 5 at top
left reminds me of The Gambler hole at King's North in MB,
but with sand instead of water.

The following hole reminds me a little (at least shape of the
hole and strategy-wise) of the first hole at NGLA.

Scott,

About 23 days too late to post, no?

I ordinarily frown on this arch's use of extraneous bunkers as Geoff Childs can attest, but I really liked this course. You could use this course on the celebrity sightings thread. There are a lot here.

Ancient Muirfield Event?

Sure, Jeff, just use one of the clues I was going to use!   ;D

For a 6-year-old course, it's partly misnamed.

At least the 4th AOTD by this architect.

Recent pugilistic news item about this town suggests that the bunkers are a lot like cauliflower ears.

Before someone corrects me on this, this is at least the 3rd
course shown from this architect, not 4th.  I thought that a
certain S.J. course of his had been shown.

Sorry, Scott, but even for me it was too obvious.

This architect should be a favorite here.  This course incorporates Golden Age strategies, ground slopes to fashion shots, reverse slope greens, etc.  more than any other modern architects work I know.

I recently heard him describe his design philosophy as trying to make the good player craft the shot he really should to play the best  he can.  I have been trying for years to come up with both a simple explanation like that, and to follow through in the design.  He does that as well as anyone.

Iwo Jima's a little young.

This one's more aged:

Technically the first AOTD in this metro area, not counting
outer 'burbs (now connected by a nice highway to their front
doors), where 3 close courses were AOTDs.

Home city of reigning champs on gridiron, the "expensive price for corn".

Caddie-only super-private club.

Lots of practice areas, two ranges and a couple practice greens.

This is Old Memorial, in Tampa, FL, designed by Steve Smyers.

other clues include:

"About 23 days too late to post" = 23 days ago
was "Memorial" Day in the U.S.

"Ancient Muirfield Event?" = old Memorial (Muirfield Village, that is)

"For a 6-year-old course, it's partly misnamed" = young
course with "Old" in the name.

3rd AOTD by Smyers (previous were Wolf Run and Royce
Brook- West.  I originally thought that Blue Heron Pines-East
had been done, hence S.J. = South Jersey)

"Iwo Jima's a little young." = not yet an "old Memorial"

"This one's more aged" a somber aerial shot of the sunken
U.S.S. Arizona in Pearl Harbor and the memorial above it.

"Technically the first AOTD in this metro area, not counting
outer 'burbs (now connected by a nice highway to their front
doors), where 3 close courses were AOTDs." refers to Tampa
area and outer 'burbs courses World Woods' pair and the
course formerly known as Dunes @ Seville.

Home city of reigning champs on gridiron, the "expensive
price for corn"= refers to current NFL champs, the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers.  "buccaneer" = expensive price for corn

"No rules, just right" is the slogan of Outback Steakhouse
(had to look that one up), HQ'd in Tampa (knew that).

Do all the courses in and around Tampa have that much practice acreage?
No formal cart paths... I assume it's private?

Finally got around to playing here on Friday. What a treat! Without a doubt it is one of the best in Florida. The greens were regrassed in July, and still havent got back to speed.
The closing stretch was a bit out of character, and a criticism would be that the course is too tough for the higher handicapper to experience the shots Symers requires.
That said, I'd love to belong to a place like this. I can't imagine there are too many better places to play on the planet than here in February.
