Is Riviera the best course on Tour?
« on: February 20, 2004, 04:45:07 PM »
Scott McCarron, an LA Native that is a top the leaderboard (so there are all the biases :)) was just quoted on USA saying

" I think this is the best golf course we play on tour, Pebble Beach is the most scenenic, but as far as pure golf goes, Riviera is the best."

Is this true? Is Riviera a better course than Pebble, is it better than any other course the tour plays today?

Jason- Ran postulated a few weeks back that it might be The Plantation course. But is that a normal tour stop?

Certainly could feature in the top few!

Possibly qualify as a top contender for most historic on tour!  Seems to pull the big sponsors and players...

I have said this from day 1 on GCA.com.....

I think Pebble Beach is the most over-rated golf course on the planet.

So I would say that I think Riviera is a better golf course than Pebble.

The Pacific Ocean has masked more crap GCA than any other person or thing in existence.

And I disagree vehemently, and whole-heartedly, with
every statement you make, except the last.

I don't disagree with that one because
to me it doesn't matter, as man does not live by
architecture alone.

I was just thinking the other day "waht really good course does the PGA tour play? Majors don't count because they are not PGA Tour events. I came up with:
Plantaion
Pebble
Riviera
TPC
Harbourtown
Muirfield Village
Colonial
Westchester

There might be a couple others, but I haven't thought of any of the tour stops that I would really look forward to playing except for these.

I wish I had a book of mine handy right now.  It was "Golf Courses of the PGA Tour;" however, it was published in the 1990s.  It is sort of sad to see how many excellent golf courses no longer host PGA events.  Off the top of my head:

Cypress Point (Crosby)
Congressional C.C. (Kemper Open)
Atlanta C.C. (Atlanta Classic)

I know Atlanta C.C. was replaced with TPC at Sugarloaf (Greg Norman); but, what courses were substituted for the others?

Carlyle -

Cypress was replaced by Poppy Hills (seems like a fair trade, no)?

Congressional was replaced by TPC at Avenel.

I don't follow the LPGA Tour much--alright, not at all--but are there any standouts hosting an LPGA event?

On ABC today Curtis Strange commented (paraphrasing) that Riviera is a great course and it doesn't have all that "sharp edged, elephant under every green and fairway, stuff that are on the modern courses. It doesn't need it because of the strategy involved.

Ian Baker responded that because Riviera is so old it has had time for the edges to soften [a non sequitur i think]

Peter Alliss jumped in and said that bulldozers and such didn't exist back in the day and that's why old courses are more natural and strategic rather than modernized like today's courses.

I'm not sure if Curtis is just jumping on the bandwagon cause he can't hit it far enough anymore or if this is his honest opinion.

Carlyle,

I don't know if it is a "true" stand-out.  However, I was lucky enough to be a member at Mission Hills country club in high school and have to say that the Dinah Shore Tournament Course is fantastic.  Tons of strategy and plenty of length for the men.  It reaches almost 7200 from the tips but can be played all the down to 6200 if you want without sacrificing much strategy.  It really is a good course and doesn't get as much respect as I think it should.
