Broadstone, Purbeck etc
« on: February 09, 2004, 06:50:29 AM »
I will be in Poole on Thursday February 26 and intend to take the chance to play one of the classic courses in the area - Broadstone, Isle of Purbeck, Parkstone or Ferndown.
I've not decided which yet but after reading opinions on this site and elsewhere am leaning in the order above. I would be interested in comments from those who may have visited one or more, particularly educated guesses on which might be the best winter course. Also, would anyone care to join me?

Andy

I haven't played any of them, but my Dad has and I think you probably have the order right.  My first choice would definitely be Broadstone (from pics and the old man's report).

Broadstone is the highest of the 4, so I think it will probably drain the best.  Ferndown is the flattest.

I want to check out Meyrick Park too, a short course but over outstanding terrain... and amazing par 3 opener and the 14th was a famous hole.  I posted old pics of a few of these courses a while ago-will email to you if you like.

Thanks Paul. I was one of a number smitten with Broadstone when you posted some pics a while back. Purbeck I remember being profiled in Golf World (UK) back in the late seventies with some  pictures that made it look like one of the most beautiful  courses in the world.
I think I will ring Broadstone first but if I can't get on there for some reason Plan B sounds good too  ;D

I've played them all but over a long time frame. Parkstone is having some disease problems on the greens at the moment but has done some great tree removal in the last few years. Purbeck I love and it should be in good condition with its open apsect. Broadstone is maintained by a top course manager so is always in good nick. Ferndown I have to say can be a bit of a dissapointment but I havent' played for about ten years so wouldn't like to be overly critical. It's just that with it holding all those tour events you would kind of expect something better.

I've played all four in recent years and I'm sure you've got the order spot on.  If you happen to get to Parkstone look up the club President, Donald Holmes.  He lives next door so, if he isn't at the club, just ask for him.  He's behind all the recent tree clearing and ecological work and if he has the time would very likely give you a conducted tour.
