Four hours in Kansas City

You potentially have four hours free in Kansas City.  You could clearly make it as far as Overland Park, Kansas or Ladue, MO (But you have already played Old Warson).  Public or Private is not an issue.  Where do you play?

David - I wouldn't advise against going as far as LaDue, seeing as the drive alone will use up all of those four free hours.  ;D

Sorry, it was a bad attempt to pick on Missouri.  Old Warson is in the Ladue outside of St. Louis but the state has two LaDue's.  There is also one next to Clinton MO (About 30 miles SW of KC).

Wolf Creek (Wolf Run??) is a great course.  I played there several years ago.  Men-only, private course, 18 holes in 3 1/2 hours.   The remaining half-hour of your 4-hour budget can be enjoyably spent in the hilltop clubhouse overlooking the course.  Hope you have fun in Kansas City

ps.  Fried chicken never tasted better than at a local Kansas City restaurant by the name of Stroud's.  There are two locations in town.  Don't miss the hot cinnamon biscuits brought to your table mid-way thru dinner.  Golf, fried chicken, biscuits...  I'm in heaven!!

A non-GCA buddy said that Tom Watson's National Golf Club of Kansas City is pretty darn solid.  Anyone been there?

Is Kansas City, MO the greatest golf hell hole on earth?

GCA is the single greatest collection of golf aficienado's ever assembled and the only golf course anyone is comfortable recommending is across the river in Kansas (Thanks Gary for recommending something - No slight intended).  Does the city need to get its entire rich popoulation together and hire Fazio, C&C or Doak?  Where does the owner of the Royals play?  Heck, KC has the Royals and the Chiefs.  Where do the players belong?  I cannot believe that a town with two major sports teams and a 12-month golf season does not have a single course worth recommending.

I hope you're not intending to play this weekend where the "12 month golf season" will be enjoying weekend temps below freezing in the evenings.

The Royals also really aren't a major sports team, sadly they're more like a AAA outfit. Maybe you can call over to the Chiefs HQ and get a course.

This group did sort of let you down, didn't it.

When I have been in KC, I have toured Mission Hills and KCCC, both near State Line Avenue SW of downtown.

For a really close one, RTJ's Tiffany Green is just south on I29.
Watson's course is on Highway 9 in Parkville, MO, near the airport, and worth a look.

Farther south, in Overland Park, etc. You have Nicklaus Lionsgate and a dozen others.  Due south, you have Hurdzans Iron Horse in Leawood, Fazio's private course Hallbrook, which is one of his most difficult courses.

There is Tillies Swope Park SE of the city, but it has been changed.  Even when I saw it years ago, it looked a lot like Dallas' Cedar Crest.

Thank you.  I was getting worried.  That gives me a few places to look at.  I am leaning towards Watson's course.

Any recommendation at all?  My Tigers are AAA as well but I know that those who golf belong to either Oakland Hills or Detroit Golf Club.

In addition to what Jeff mentioned I would recommend Falcon
Ridge, Sycamore Ridge, Prairie Highlands and Deer Creek.
Heritage Park is a muni, but is a good test also.

David. I would be more than glad to take you to Shadow Glen CC in Olathe. Golf Mag had it best new private course and it was rated 86 in the top 100 several years ago ( Golf Mag). 13th hole was rated the best 13th hole in country. Morrish Weiskopt Watson course. Public wise, Falcon Ridge would be my top pick. Deer Creek, ran out of land, Wolf Creek, all male is a ok course but has some really bad holes which spoils the other good ones. KCCC is a soild track but very tree lined. Indian Hills is a Tilly course but has so many trees it has killed the course. In that I live here I might be able to help out.

Going to.....Kansas City

Check into Staley Farms Golf Club.  I saw it under construction in June of 2001.  Lots of big tilt,some neat natural hazards, very thoughtful routing and sporty greens.  As I recall it wasn't far from the airport, east/southeast.  I believe their website provides directions and a lot more about the golf course.  I hope to see it again with grass someday soon.

I ditto Danno!  I enjoyed Shadow Glen very much, probably a 6-6.5 in my book.  The Fazio layout Hallbrook was worth visiting too, although it is out-of-this-world tough.

I would encourage everyone to try Staley Farms and see what you think.  Even Eric thinks he over-designed a couple of the greens, but he is a very talented young man and I would be surprised if this group didn't think highly of the course.

Kansas City golf is fine in my opinion.  I had a chance to see two courses, the municipal Shoal Creek and the highly exclusive National Golf Links of Kansas City.

Shoal Creek is a wonderful course for a muni.  Tommy would love it as it truly has a links feel and very little containment.  The fairway bunker work is very good.  The greenside bunker work is OK but very strong considering what you get on most municipal courses.  The par 4's are really the strength of the course and it has a strong collection of short par fours with good playability options.  The course is not going to make any top 100 lists but does not pretend that it will.  It is one of the better municipal courses I have ever played.

National Golf Club is a very strong effort.  You had better score early because 1-4 might be the four easiest holes on the course and then it takes you strokes back.  #9 is one of the coolest tee shots I have ever hit and is on the short list of the best 9th holes I have ever played.  The topography of the property most reminded me of TPC Sugarloaf and the course had a very similar feel.  It is a wonderful golf course and appeared to be a great club.  I would feel very comfortable recommending this course to other visitors.

Staley Farms is a very silly course.. the greens are 3 putt all over them. No matter where you hit it you have a chance of 3 or 4 putting.. I have played there several times and twice a group of us have walked off after 9 not because we are bad but the greens make it no fun. Also who ever put in BENT in the KC summer either owns a cut of the action on the water bill or was insane at the time. Most people that play in KC ( I am from KC) advoid that course. Private wise I would stick with Shadow Glen ( it was in the Golf Mag top 100 at one time) as it is pound for pound the best test. KC has the following designers in its town

RTJ Jr. ( 2)
Morrish and W
H and Fry
Fazio
Tilly ( 2 of those)
Bendalow ( 2)
Jack
Watson ( 1.5)

A buddy of mine was a member at Milburn CC in Overland Pk, and raves about it.  An old Langford parkland course.  I never played it but supposedly it has great conditioning, fantastic greens, and a first-class traditional feel.  He doesn't like the course as much as Prairie Dunes, but tells me that it is worth the effort to go see it.
