Pinehurst advice
« on: April 02, 2024, 10:37:11 PM »
Looking for some advice. Going to Pinehurst with a buddy. My second time, his first. Playing #2,4 and 10 and staying at the resort. Where would you play after that? We have two days. I’ve played Tobacco and Southern Pines before the reno and loved both. Both Mid Pines and Pine Needles look very good. Also where to stay? Anyone ever stay at the Pine Crest Inn? Thanks

I was there three weeks ago. Played TR and Southern Pines. TR is one of my favorite public courses in the country, and Southern Pines was awesome. The day I played Southern Pines was windy and the course played very hard. Having played Pine Needles a couple of years ago, I would split 10 rounds at 6 TR, 3 SP, and 1 PN.

You can't go wrong with any of the courses named and I've enjoyed the Pinecrest Inn over the years.

I second that and felt Pine Needles was pretty good too. As are across the road from one another can be played in the same day.

Sandy-Pine Needles has grown on me after each play and at this point is a jump ball with Mid Pines. The greens and surrounds are really compelling and I had a member tell me that they were his favorite set in the area next to #2. MP and PN shouldn’t be missed time permitting so enjoy the trip and report back about #10.

If you played Southern Pines before the renovation, it might be interesting to see it now?

Fwiw, I think SP is now my favorite of the three among SP, Mid Pines, and Pine Needles.  But that’s sort of splitting hairs; all 3 are just great, great golf courses.

Thanks you all for the great feedback.
You’re right on AG , I’m very interested in seeing the new Southern Pines since I thought the old version was so good. Looks like there are no bad choices to be made here.
Cheers

Sandy,
I'm a little confused - you say you are staying at the resort, but then ask where to stay. Does this mean you're at the resort for part of the trip only? I've stayed at the Carolina and Pine Crest and both are fine, but I would rather stay in Southern Pines. I have had good experiences with airbnbs there and that will be cheaper. Good restaurant options in walking distance - strongly recommend Vito's for dinner & Betsy's for breakfast. But do go to the Track Kitchen in Pinehurst one morning.
You mention that you have two days - assume that means in addition to days spend at the resort courses? Southern Pines is completely different from the course you played pre-renovation and well worth a visit. I like MidPines a bit more than Pine Needles, but either is good.

The Cradle is fun as well, although I think #3 at the resort is really fun and worth seeing over it.
