Your favorite places to be and play golf
« on: December 08, 2021, 08:36:16 AM »
I recently was back at Musgrove Mill. It was my away club for over twenty years until I had to give it up a couple of years ago. I had forgotten how much I love it there. The course keeps you attention on every hole. They have some of the most interesting greens Palmer ever designed. I figure there are eight holes where I think birdie and 14 holes where one false move and I hope for bogie. The membership, staff, accommodations all say park you car and don't leave. If they had a 1000 feet of vertical drop and snow I'd never have to leave.

The other place where I could just stay and let them throw away the key is The European Club. It is my wife's favorite course in the world. She doesn't hit it very far anymore but the course allows her to get it around. For me the course offers challenge, beauty, and fun. It is relatively wide off the tee and the shots into, around, and on the greens keep your attention. I don't think birdie very often and since they have cut down the very high rough it is eminently playable.  Twelve A is one of my favorite par threes anywhere and the holes along the sea are just terrific. I could just pitch a tent and be content there. Besides, you get to have lunch with Pat Ruddy and shoot the breeze with his kids. I love the entire experience.
Where there is no love, put love; there you will find love.

A couple of others might run it close but most likely the St Olaf course at Cruden Bay. But not necessarily 365 days per year!

Ballybunion.

I have cried a few times when I had to leave and struggled to hold back tears on other occasions.

The feeling is mutual....

Musgrove Mill misses you just as much as you miss it!!

As far as The European Club goes I only have the one trip there, but the course and Pat Ruddy's conversation do live up to the hype however...

For me it has to be Machrihanish.
The long, scenic drive heightening the anticipation.
Two brilliant, yet utterly different from each other, golf courses set side by side around a lovely bay.
Terrific accommodations with such welcoming hospitality right at the first tee.
Springbank distillery ten minutes away in Campbeltown.
Haven’t been for a few years now, but looking forward to a trip early next year in the new motorhome.
Happy Festivus and the annual airing of grievances to all,

Rob-Having the Surf School on the perimeter is pretty cool. I agree that the town and vibe are terrific.

For me it is virtually any new place.

I love golf trips because you soak in the atmosphere of a new setting while focusing on the challenge of the game.   I find I prefer that sort of travel over taking a series of tours.

Goswick is the most recent place I have visited that really struck a chord with me.   I enjoyed the course, loved the setting and did not feel a part of the herd of American tourists that frequent the bigger name links courses.

If I hit the lotto (will need to be low 9 figures, probably), I'm decamping for The Abaco Club. The course is wonderful and the quiet vibe down there is just about perfect, IMO.

But back here on Planet Earth, the best munis are my favorite places. My local spot here in FL will be tough to pull myself away from once the new clubhouse is built. Keney Park in CT, Charleston Muni, Papago, all superb places that their people just love.

My favorite place in the world may strike others as uninspired--but for me it would definitely be Pebble Beach.  Golf, beauty, food, friends, etc.  Whenever I am anywhere else in the world, I find myself asking why I am not in Pebble Beach.  I have felt that way since I "discovered" it over 50 years ago.  To  me, it is as close to heaven as I think I'll find on this earth.

Centerton in New Jersey

It must be in the heart of the winter.

It is with my old winter golfing buddies.

It’s a forty minute ride with great craic.

   It’s $25 to play.

It’s a fun course and more so when frozen.

We stop either for a takeaway cheesesteak right near the course or go to the diner for outstanding food at an incredible price.

Then there is the ride home sometimes with an Eagles game on.

  I miss my boys.

Seconded.  I think i could play BallyB every day till the end of time and follow that up with a pint or three at Mikey Joe's.  Don't see how i could tire of it.

Pacific Dunes.  It isn't difficult to find four other fantastic places to play nearby.  Each course is different and its links golf.  Something so different that my nearby choices.  It feels the same as the first time in 1998.

I would go down the coast just a bit to CPC, but somehow my invitation to join keeps getting lost in the mail.

Too many choices in Scotland and Ireland, and alas, when I renewed recently my quest to spend a chunk of the year there, my wife shot it down again.

But no real complaints: we love our away club--Hope Valley and its environs. Plus MP/PN is just down the road. As posted here before, few better places to hang out than the patio bar overlooking the 18th at MP. And our first time at SP had the same benefit--great view and even better golf nuts.

While it gets no love here I still can vividly remember standing on the 3rd tee and looking over the green down into LaJolla and standing on the 4th tee when the pacific was as flat as a pond thinking it doesn't get much better than this. Torrey Pines South.

You didn't have the hang gliders buzz you from above then. ;D
I don't think I could relax thinking of the property taxes I would owe living there. A childhood friend who has done well, was complaining about the federal property tax reduction a few years back. He said how much (let us slip I think) he was paying in property taxes in LaJolla.  Wow!

My happy place. Not just for the course.  I love the town, the scenery and most of all the great people there.
