While meandering through Google Earth I happened upon Charlesland GC in County Wicklow Ireland. Looking on their website they have announced that they will be closing for good at 4:00PM on 12/31/2020 due to the business not being able to be cash flow positive and requiring continued cash infusions from the owners.


There appears to be no mention of this course on GCA. It appears to be right along the coast and must be a pretty site. Has anyone played the course and is it a loss to someone traveling in the area.

I quite like Charlesland and I felt it never quite got its dues.


The routing was quite good. The detail pretty average. Much like many Eddie Hackett courses. This was one that I fancied having a crack at doing a full-on makeover.


There was a railway embankment separating the course from the water so the views of the sea were non-existent from the adjacent front nine.


I’ll miss it but for GCA visitors, there are probably 100 courses in Ireland that you should see before it (excluding the ones you’ve already seen).

I played it about five years ago. I was on a driving tour and stopped at golf courses I came upon. I don't remember a whole bunch about it, but do remember that it was fun and I enjoyed my three hours there. There are three other golf courses nearby, so the competition could have made it difficult to get the play required to keep the course open.
