Mike-Plymouth CC-1910 par 69 Donald Ross course with a terrific Ian Andrew restoration. Logistically it’s less than thirty miles from Kittansett.

Essex is excellent, a wide variety of bunker styles, some really outstanding holes and a step back in time.  Plymouth and Old Sandwich are very close together and made for a wonderful 36 hole day on my sole trip to Boston.

Boston Golf Club is my favorite I have played in state, followed closely by Essex and Eastward Ho. It's outstanding and very underrated.


I would also look into when greens are punched. They take a LONG time to heal in the spring.

I'd gravitate to the classics and would recommend:


Yes for sure to Essex County (45 mins from TCC)
Myopia is better than ever
Newport (45 min from Kittansett)
Eastward Ho (an hour from Kittansett)
and if you want another, Salem is an excellent Ross

I’m missing your point John. I can play any of these courses because of friends I have made for 40 years. I just appreciate the knowledge of this group.

Play George Thomas’s “Little Marion” as a warmup for Kittansett. A nine holer that will leave you smiling with plenty of quirk.

If you have to choose between Eastward Ho and Essex County, I think you'd prefer the former.   I know I did, although Essex is very good, as well.   Eastward Ho is "special", in the words of the person who turned me on to it.

Let me also throw George Wright Municipal into the discussion.   As the only person on the planet in history who played both Myopia Hunt and George Wright on the same day, I think you'd be quite impressed.

There is a glut of courses that can be added based on your itinerary. If you go up to the North Shore you have a pile of choices with Myopia, Salem and Essex being at the top of the class. I’ll plug Bass Rocks GC in Gloucester which is one of only four courses designed by Herbert Leeds. On the way out stop at Virgilio’s for a St. Michaels Sandwich and a cannoli.

Assuming Fishers is too out of the way...and you want three I would recommend Eastward Ho!, Essex and Myopia.

In addition to these, Winchester is very underrated, and Whitinsville is a great add on if you get down that way.  If you went to Fishers Island you'd also pass 3-4 courses worth seeing in Rhode Island.

Whilst I haven’t played most of these courses, I find it surprising how rarely Boston GC comes up on these threads. It is superb.

I know you know this already but there are literally a hundred courses (probably many more) between you and MA that are worth seeing for a variety of reasons.  I just hope most are allowing guest play next spring because many are still not welcoming outside play (especially if you have been/or are coming from a quarantined state).

I've heard Charles River is excellent and it is close to TCC. 


I can vouch for Salem - great track and great fun - though it can get a little soggy.  It is relatively close to Essex and Myopia.  Have fun!
