Funny Movies to Pass the Time
« on: March 29, 2020, 01:15:22 PM »
I watched “Fatso” last night with Dom DeLuise and Anne Bancroft which was released in 1980 and produced by Mel Brooks. I have probably watched it 20 times over the last forty years though not in a while. “You ate the ony!!!!”

Anything by Mel Brooks - even "Robin Hood - Men in Tights"!

(From the 2000 Year Old Man skits:
Carl: Tell me: is it true that Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor?
Mel: No, that's definitely not true!
Carl: It's not...
Mel: No - he stole from everybody and kept everything for himself!)

Young Frankenstein:

Fredrick: Igor, may I speak to you for a moment?
Igor: Of course.
Fredrick: Thank you. Please take a seat.
Igor: Thank you.
Fredrick: Now, was that brain you gave me, was it Hans Delbruck's?
Igor: No.
Fredrick: Ah, good. Do you mind telling me whose brain it was?
Igor: You won't be angry?
Fredrick: I won't be angry.
Igor: Abbey someone.
Fredrick: Abbey someone. Abbey who?
Igor: Abbey Normal, I think.
Fredrick: Abbey Normal.
Igor: Yes, I'm almost sure that was the name.
(Beat)
Fredrick: You gave me an abnormal brain to put into 7 foot tall monster! is that what you're telling me!!

If you're OK with gratuitous profanity, Dave Chappelle "Sticks and Stones" and Bill Burr "Paper Tiger" stand-up specials on Netflix.

Monty Python, Holy Grail and Life of Brian.

Midnight Run, a 1988 Martin Brest film that's really a road-trip buddy film disguised as a comedic action thriller. Starring Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin in a master casting match-up. The rock-em sock-em car/copter/train chases are overdone, but the interplay between the two leads is great stuff.

Scorcese's The King of Comedy may not be everyone's idea of a "funny" movie but it has wonderful satirical moments.

The Thin Man series of movies is worth it just for watching the great William Powell and Myrna Loy interact, and I think the writing in The Philadelphia Story is some of the wittiest among Golden Era movies, and made all the better by the delivery of those great lines by Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn.

Some Like it Hot may be, minute for minute, the funniest movie ever made.

Finally, anything by Preston Sturges.

Warning: Shameless Plug.

https://www.amazon.com/Breakdowns-Melanie-Alexander/dp/B077QMGNDV

Our feature "Breakdowns" is still rolling along on Amazon Prime - although it is better known as its original name "Writer's Cramp." Our theatrical agent changed the name for US Distribution, the other six countries it is still called WR.

If you want a twisted comedy, I'm guessing most of your will get a kick out of it - although there is no sex, violence, nudity or profanity. They gave it a PG because of a smoking scene - but whatever . . . Directed by Darva D. Campbell (known hereabouts as "Her Redness") and lit and shot by an obscure former golf writer.

You'll also see Neal Meagher's name in the credits, whose artistic talents - across several departments - was a fabulous addition to the crew. Mrs. Meagher even contributed her fabulous cooling skills as guest Crafty.

After you rewatch the Monty Python films - or Animal House, here are a few suggestions:

#2. Watch "Showgirls." It retires the trophy for so-bad-it-is-great . . . . and the cinematography is stunning. I found myself running sequences back and forth to watch them again - not for the ubiquitous nudity, but the sheer nutty, over-the-top behavior of the characters. You'll love it, just don't show it to any kids.

#3. "The Room" - and then watch "The Disaster Artist" as a double-feature. You'll thank me . . . . but watch the original before the parody/remake. I laughed so hard I nearly peed my pants.

#4. "The Return of the Pink Panther" . . . . funniest Peter Sellers movie ever made - though not as poignantly funny as "Being There."

#5. "Harold and Maude." This is still the funniest movie I have ever seen - for those with a decidedly offbeat sense of humor. Ironically, filmed right down the street from our house - and the last feature film made primarily on the S.F. Peninsula since, you guessed it: Writer's Cramp.

That is one of my wife's absolute favorite movies.

FWIW, the generation gap may be too much for many of you, but when we were building Ballyneal, my crew had a lot of time to pass in the evenings.  Their go-to movie that summer was "Napoleon Dynamite".  They insisted on renting it whenever I was in town to watch it again.  Only later did I learn how much my kids loved it.

Perfect!
I fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia".
Man, William Goldman sure knew how to write for the movies!

Not a movie, per se, but the prequel to the “Naked Gun” series of movies....watch the 6 episodes of “Police Squad”. Pay attention to the layering in each of the prologues as they identify each criminal they sent to the pen...also, they must have known they weren’t getting renewed, as they destroy the set, hilariously, during the credits of the final episode. Leslie Nielsen...

Female criminal- “Is this some kind of bust?”

Lieutenant Drebin- “That’s very impressive, yes...”

Somewhere there is an article about favorite dance scenes in movies, and Napoleon's is on it. A movie my kids loved in high school and brought to my attention. For that generation of kids, tater tots have a certain meaning that goes right over most of their parents.

I watched Airplane the other night for the first time in a long time and if you're of certain age say plus 50 it's still hilarious. My 23 year old son watched it with me and kind of looked sideways at some of the stuff I was LOL.

If you're looking for something that you likely haven't seen yet, "Cedar Rapids" was really funny and didn't get a ton of attention.

Harold and Maude is tough to beat.

But The Producers may top it.

And although not pure comedy, Beverly Hills Cops is awfully entertaining.

Then again, there is Caddyshack.

Just saw a hilarious movie I knew nothing about but dvr'd from HBO called Cedar Rapids. Great cast including Ed Helms, John C Reilly, Ann Heche and Sigourney Weaver along with some other great character actors. It was like an R rated "The Office" and came as a great surprise. 4 stars.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.
