I don't see Sharon Woods in Cincinnati OH on the list. It maybe one of Diddel's very best designs. I thought George O'Neil originally designed Erskine in South Bend.

Tom,

I know O'Neil did South Bend CC, but I've never seen him credited with Erskine.  But who knows...

I am beginning to wonder if all of this attributing certain courses to certain architects is truly futile with every course seemingly makes changes whenever the mood suits them which immediately take the design further and further from the original.  That doesn't even take into account the changes that occur because of maintenance, conditioning and natural evolution of a course.

Here is another Diddel old thread:

As for Erskine, I read an article in either the American Golfer or Golf Illustrated right after the course opened about it being a George O'Neil course.

Is there a poet in the house?

A guy named "William Hickman Diddel" *deserves* to be immortalized in verse.

And I'm too busy (despite appearances) today.

My brother is super fond of the current Wichita Country Club that was conceived around 1950 by Mr. Diddel with some recent renovation work my some guy named Brauer. They are hosting the Kansas Amateur this year.

If you ever run across a link to that article I would be interested to see it or have it sent to me in hard copy.  Erskine was opened in 1934 or so, although there is less information on its opening than one might think.

I need to trek down to the local library some day and look through the microfiche.

Ran across a notation of a W. Diddel as the professional at the Winona Assembly Club in Winona Lake, IN from a 1908 golf guide.  The timing is interesting, as by all account Diddel was still in college at the time and would go on to win the Indiana Amateur championship a few times in the following years.

Was this Diddel's father or another relative?

I doubt it would be Bill's father, because billdiddel.com says he first saw golf from a hill overlooking a course. If it was his father, I would think he would have first seen golf by his father's side.

Also, makes a close relative a probably not IMO.
