It appears that all golf courses in the Republic of Ireland are being compelled to close.

This is indeed true. From midnight tonight.

It sets a horrible precedent because whilst we are going back in to some form of lockdown, it is not as strict as April with some sport and training ongoing, all construction ongoing and schools and colleges still open.

Any time we revisit this level of lockdown, golf will now be expected to close.

absolutely silly.

One of the reasons golf has gone is because the country lost its collective mind in August when a few politicians, judges and others - who had been on a society outing - had a post round dinner on the first day of new rules that forbade the numbers attending...

The Irish public became obsessed with it and a number of very high profile people have had their careers ruined because of it.

Known as “golfgate” and has probably done more harm to the sport here than the Pro-V1.

Hilarious John...if it were true.

Even here in oppressive Utah the bars, night clubs, and "gentlemen's" club have all re-opened long ago!

strip clubs in New Mexico are still clothed.

Yikes,
the worst is its the last 6 weeks of reasonable weather..at a itme when many clubs just can't take any more blows.

Irish golf has been hit hard throughout this pandemic.
Yes the tourist industry has been hit but we've seen the biggest boom in golf club memberships ever in the last 6 months, any club looking for members has taken in at least 50-150 new members

Sounds like they're doing it wrong then!  No wonder they're closed.   ;)

Some do but most take as many as they can, the issue many were facing before this closedown was not enough capacity with reduced daylight and too many members

Around 2010 overseas life was something like 10k euro.

A couple years ago I remember seeing 40k.

Website doesn't list anything now.  Guessing they aren't really taking new members.

I suppose there is at least one aspect of golf clubs that is clearly not helping during this pandemic...

My club in Toronto did not have any weddings, banquets, external meetings, etc all season.  I am pretty sure that was the same for all clubs here in Ontario.

With the lockdown announced for England today, will golf courses there have to close similar to Ireland or can they remain open as it seems parks will be?

Also looks like along with not being move around, you can’t even leave the country.  Ouch.

Strange times. As I currently understand it -
England - no golf from tomorrow
Scotland - can play golf
Wales - no golf currently - but Welsh residents should be able to play again in a few days time (no sneaking in from England though)
NI - can play golf
RoI - no golf

And Northern Ireland have just closed golf again for 6 weeks.

While the Republic have limited to two-balls.

So no golf in the Republic of Ireland and 'the North' nor in Wales. Scotland still okay to play presumably. Below is what England Golf have re-published this evening (although applying from 20th Dec) as I assume a reminder message given todays announcement about changes in areas/C-19 tiers.
Curious to know what the situation is in various Continental European countries. Anyone happen to know?

Mainland Scotland is in Tier 4 which means courses are open and as long as a club has a Covid officer fourball play is allowed. However, no travelling between council areas is permitted.

There’s no inside activity - catering, lockers etc. In theory this is the strictest tier so play should be allowed for the foreseeable future. We’re helped in that infection levels are quite significantly below England and Wales but it’s a fast changing picture....

Wow, that's a bit stern and out of touch especially for January.

Yes,

But not surprising when everything is over-booked.  One of the few times they can dictate terms and make more money...but I suspect a day of reckoning will come when things are back to "normal"
