How Is LULU Doing?
« on: February 18, 2019, 04:10:39 AM »
I recall being impressed with LuLu after my one and only play.  The club was struggling and they decided to open the course up with a member for the day approach...at a very reasonable price I thought.  Since then the house burned down.  I am curious as to how the club/course is doing.  Has the public approach helped?  What are the plans going forward?

Sean,

They are very active on social media and seem to be constantly sprucing up the course, building new tees, rebuilding bunkers, etc. They are also in the process of building a new clubhouse at the moment. A good friend of mine is a member out there and he loves it.
Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in.

Reports are  that they have a good group of golfers many quite proficient. A bunch of their members traveled down to play with us recently and were quite good to our staff and a good day was had by all. I would think they will grow the membership going forward and wish them all the best at the club. Places like LuLu are good for golf!

Played there last summer. Temporary routing starting at 11 due to club house construction. Course was in very good condition. Always a fun and enjoyable experience to play there.

The only thing I would add to Steve’s comment is that I played it twice last summer.

I understand that non-member daily fee visits are now limited to 6 plays per year.

The membership is growing and my guess is once the clubhouse is open sign-ups will really surge.

The clubhouse is not being built to host weddings, Lu Lu will be a golfers' golf club.

LuLu is doing well.

The improvement in course conditions from July 1, 2015 to this past season is hard to describe. In truth, those improvements were primarily seen in the first 15 months of that period with new superintended Matt Stout. The last two seasons have been consistently very good with some infrastructure upgrades and moderate tree work. The course is really a blast to play in that it has a mix of holes you think you should birdie and ones you hold on for dear life...and carries a tremendous home course advantage...which is nice...

The clubhouse is taking well longer than anyone expected/wanted but is nearing the home stretch. Mike is correct, the goal of the clubhouse is to facilitate club member meals and small member functions so should be ore efficient than some others in the area.

Possible re-routing of the course once the clubhouse is opened will be interesting. Interesting in the context of our routing questions/conversations around here.

I play there several times a year with my friends who belong.  Right now, it is extremely affordable, but once the clubhouse is finished, dues will have to go up.  I think how much they increase will determine how many members stay and new folks come in.

Everyone knows how good the course is—that's no secret.  The clubhouse is kind of a wild card, and has been for a few years now.

I had heard rumors a few years back that Manufacturers was thinking about purchasing LuLu as they are across the street(Twining Road) from each other. Besides Merion is there another 36 hole club in the GAP that could match the strength of the Flynn and Ross holes?

It’s a cool idea Tim, but I don’t think it ever actually reached the guys on the Manufacturers side of the road.

Philly Cricket, Stonewall and Merion are the 36 hole facilities I can think of and all would seem to stack up well against LuLu/Mannys...

I just played LuLu today with my roommate. It was a ton of fun and definitely plan on going back before the season is over. A couple of the greens were a bit over the top where I putted off numerous time. For the most part though, if some of those greens have reasonable pins, they are great. For late April, the greens had nearly fully recovered from aeration, the fairways were relatively firm and the greens were rock solid which made for some interesting recoveries and approaches. There is still a ton of construction going on but it doesn't inhibit play too much.

I was paired with a member, and he said that most likely the club will go back to fully private once the clubhouse construction is completed, so I would suggest to get out sooner rather than later.

With the clubhouse construction on the original site (central, just left of the road) we’ve been using what was the pool house as home base. Hole #11 is the starting point and we play straight through, finishing at 10.

Mike, thanks for that aerial.  I damned near teared up.  Both the sum and the parts are wonderful at Lulu.  There is some real architectural interest there and the architect seemed to dig deep in his bag of tricks:

The 2nd is somewhat an Alps hole.
The two deflection bumps at the front corners of the third green are neat and pair nicely with the length of the hole and likelihood of a running approach.
Squeezing in the 4th hole to take advantage of the quarry is a nifty feat of routing.
Nobody does a better job of routing a long one-shotter uphill than DJR - the 6th is a good example.
The 8th is a fun dell hole.
The 11th is a solid uphill hole with an effective centerline bunker obscuring the approach.
The downhill 12th begs for the ground game.
The 5th and 13th are a prototypical grown man two-shotter than Ross seemed to deploy repeatedly.  Can't recall but don't they both play slightly uphill?
Nice bunkering at the 9th, 14th and 17th.
The downhill pitch to the 16th is as dicey as it gets - maybe better to lay back to a flat spot from the tee?
Nice pair of foozle bunkers at the 18th.

Lulu belongs on that "all a golf course needs to be, and nothing more" list.

Then again, perhaps I was intoxicated by the company of Redanman who eased around the course at level par.  I miss Bill.

It was the postings of Bogey H and Sean A that pushed me to take a detour today to play Lulu, finally. I really loved it. I played with a member and he told me there are two rules:
  • No Jeans
  • Play in 4 Hours
That is pretty much perfection to me, even if there is some folklore in there. They have had a bunch of rain recently, so the rough was a little thick, but they were cutting it where they could. I felt every hole was Ross-ian very good, and yes a couple were great. All world? I loved that short Par 3.

I would love to have that course, and that vibe in NYC. If the Philly guys organize an outing when the new clubhouse is finished, I am in.

Thanks Sean and thanks Bogey.

Mike,

Good idea! Yes, let's have an outing at the new LuLu. If the clubhouse is completed by mid September. I'll be in Philly from the 13th to the 16th but I'm not available on the 15th.
