OT: Best golf tip you've ever received
« on: January 30, 2019, 03:34:25 PM »
I've done this before but it's been several years...but it was really interesting.

My question is...when you were suffering through a period of poor play and someone offered you a tip to help...and it really helped...what was that tip?

What was the best golf tip you've ever received?

To touch the inside top of my golf shoes with my toes. At address of course.

I don't remember the mans name but it was on a golf course just outside East St. Louis where I liked to play in college. I was a plus handicap at the time and liked to pick up little money games with guys I would approach on the range. This guy had seen me around and didn't seem all that impressive on the surface. He looked up at me as I approached and said "Son you don't want none of this." We became good friends and went on to play most every day, gratis. I heard that he had won a bunch of tournaments but don't have a clue who he was. But then again, I can't remember my roommates names either. Such is youth. Even today when I start to feel like I'm just a bit off I touch my toes to the top of my shoes.

Shorten the swing. Whenever I start getting too loose, I try to shorten the swing. Makes things simple.

1) If you see a man with a beat up set of mismatched irons but a dime-sized worn spot in the middle of his 1-iron,don't play him for money.

2) Take a couple weeks off--and then quit.

When Im not hitting it well (which is often) I think back to a simple piece of advice my older brother gave me when I was learning to play.

Look at the blade of grass directly behind the center of the ball.
Keep your eye on that blade.
Do NOT move your head during the swing; do NOT take your eye off thats blade of grass.
Even after the swing, keep your eye on where that blade was.

The best tip I know for golf--especially putting--but maybe for all of life--is from Bob Rotella--"It's more important to be decisive than correct."

My flushed 9-iron into the breeze and bulkhead on 17 at TPC Sawgrass begs to differ.

 8) take your divot after you hit the ball...

Best tip by far came from frat brother at Stanford in the 60's who was a good golfer and Pennsylvania HS wrestling champion at his weight.  It related to bunker play, but if I told you what it was I would have to kill y'all....

Mine was from Mike Whitaker during a round at Brora in May 2010 when I missed several short putts in secession.

He told me to concentrate with those little ones on keeping the face of the putter moving towards the hole for as long as possible after striking the ball.

As recently as today when I missed a three-footer mid-round, that advice comes to mind and I consciously think of it on every putt for the rest of the round and rarely miss another one.

Without a doubt the best advice I ever received was from my father.  He believed that on many Ross courses (indeed many courses in general) it is best to leave the ball between me and the hole.

From Tommy Armour, the Silver Scot: start the downswing by driving/turning your right knee towards your left knee -- and keep on until they actually touch.

I find it does indeed trigger all manner of right shifts and correct positions, all by itself. And for someone who took up the game very late and who gets too caught up in trying to understand the theories and how the components combine to make a single, smooth, unified swing, it's proven to be a great tip. So many good things follow, seemingly all by themselves.

I was just thinking: swing harder / have fun!

Also - on the downswing, pull the chain/put your hands in your pocket/keep the towel tucked in.  Hmm, that’s too many...maybe that’s the problem....

On the backswing - low and slow
On every shot - stay down

Of course, from Harvey Penick's the Little Red Book - "take dead aim" (which encompasses pretty much everything).
