Ferry Point, NY???
« on: April 27, 2011, 02:07:01 PM »
Ryan Farrow's thread on created landscapes got me wondering.  With all the lack of new course construction to talk about, what's going on with Ferry Point?  Any of our New York friends see anything?  Calling Jay Flemma.

Heck, they were working on Ferry Point when Mr. Nicklaus came in for the groundbreaking at Sebonack.

Are they getting anything finished?

I guess I will be flying into LaGuardia in two weeks, so I will try to get a left-window seat to report on progress.

I have wanted to start a thread on this for a while and Tom D, would be curious about your thoughts after your aerial fly-by. From my own flights in and out of LaGuardia, it is clear that construction started at Ferry Point and at some point ground to a halt (an oblique aerial shot from Bing can be found HERE.  What was left is an interesting landscape (a moonscape would be a more appropriate descriptor), with numerous earthworks and abrupt hills and hollows created from preliminary grading/filling on what was presumably at one time a relatively flat site.

What I think would be most interesting, is if a new architect came in and built a "lay of the land" type course that incorporated the now crumpled parcel without moving too much earth or only as necessary. It would be interesting to see a new routing atop this site. It would certainly make the project more economically viable. Surely this has been done before (Tom - did Fazio ever break ground at Stonewall or did he just provide a routing?).

Would be an interesting exercise.

SPDB:  No, Tom Fazio had only done a routing for Stonewall, but we were obliged to do a similar amount of earthmoving in the same areas based on the permits which were based on the Fazio plan.

I used to talk with Jim Urbina and James Duncan about just letting someone go in and move a half million yards of earth and try to create some features, and THEN do a routing and try to build a course on top of it without moving much earth.  The Streamsong project has actually been something like that, at perhaps ten times the scale.

Thanks Jay, knew you would be up to the task ;D

Greg, say hi to Mr. Lipe.  You got one of the most unheralded guys in the business there.

SPDP, when I did the feasibility study for NY Parks after developer bailed, that's what had to done for the most part.  The fill that had come in over the years had been placed roughly according to Jack's plan so the big ridgeline mounds where already there.  Anyone who knows about landfill courses knows that these big fills are where all the big, ugly stuff is buried (concrete beams, chunks of concrete/rebar,etc) so digging into them would be a terrifying and expensive proposition from a material handling standpoint.
From the rendering posted, it does look like 90% of the routing still follows Jacks original plan.  The changes look to be 16, 17 and 18. I reccommended eliminating the "Conference and Banquet Center" and "GM's House" and shifting the 16th to occupy this land.  Which looks like it was done. Jack had an awkward par 3, 17th with a walkback to the 18th tees.  This has been improved by the tees for 18 being moved up to adjacent to the 17th green.

It was a fun exercise designing a course with in the existing confines of what was already there.  Of course, I think my design (which I had to grade out to make sure it worked and to derived a construction cost estimate) is superior.  But then what knd f architect would I be if I didn't? ;D

The last time I flew over the site about two weeks ago; I was surpried to see people and trucks on the location.  It looked like they were doing some work.

It seems that they finished six holes and the course is on track to be best new course for 2013.

I wonder what they call reduced rates??

I wouldn't trust the Parks Department to walk my dog, let alone run my golf course...
