That chapel is haunting. Even more so when you recall that until sometime around the turn of the 20th century it was covered up to its steeple in drifting sand.


Do you know if the excavation of the chapel was done in connection with the construction of the course or for other reasons?

Dornick Hills in Ardmore, OK may have the most unusual cemetery on it's land - it's the final resting place of GCA Perry Maxwell.

From the Dornick Hills website:

"Dornick Hills was built in 1914 by Perry Maxwell on what was previously the Maxwell's dairy farm. This was the first golf course he designed and built....Maxwell, the "Father of Dornick Hills," died in 1952 at the age of 73 and is buried in the family cemetery on the ridge north of the seventh fairway."

Are there any other situations where the architect is buried on/near a course he designed?  How about his first course.  Old Tom Morris comes to mind with his grave within walking distance of TOC.  Any others?

One that comes to mind is James Braid. even though he didn't design Walton Heath, he is forever linked to the club. He is buried in St Peters church which is no more than 1/2 mile from WHGC. His house is about a wedge from the club and I'm pleased to say there is a blue plaque on the cottage.

Gorge Vale in Victoria BC has a cemetery inside their property. The 12th hole has it running down its right side. Gorge might be a bit hilly but it's a solid choice to play in Victoria if one can't get on Colwood or VGC.
