Audubon golf club...New Orleans
« on: December 01, 2015, 10:22:26 PM »
Whilst in Nola last weekend I decided to check out the GOurmets choice of Mr Doak.
Not really knowing what to expect I was delighted to play a very interesting gold course, one that is full of fun and one I can now fully understand having its place on a gourmets choice.
In a city where culinary gourmets are abound, this course fulfills all of my require to for day well spent on a golf course.
Calling this course an executive course does not do it justice, it is so much more.
By definition I suppose the presence of 12 pat threes fulfills that description, but most of these par threes are not your run of the mill, executive holes.
Two are short in the barely 100 yard distance but beyond that you are faced here with a quality set of par threes varying in distance all the way up to 240 yards.
The short ones themselves are cool little holes, with great green complexes and bunkering.
Conditioning was superb, the greens a little grainy but for this time of the year pre aerification about what one should expect of Bermuda surfaces.
Holes 9 & 18 are both risk reward par fives fun to play with super green complexes allowing for some great pin placements.
Whilst on that topic the day I played the pins were very tough, quite a challenge that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Creating such a delightful course in a limited space is indeed worthy of MR Doaks praise and one I fully endorse.
The perimeter of the course displays some marvelous houses in true southern style, some gorgeous trees , mainly beautiful, southern oaks draped in moss, simply stunning.
Stan Stopa and his staff are so accommodating I have rarely felt so welcome at a golf course, great diplomats for a facility in a city where quality of service is so paramount.
Quite simply a very enjoyable experience.

In a city I adore, it is a treat to find a golf course that matches the quality of music , food and people of the area.

Uncharacteristically for a New Orleans destination you make no mention of how the food is??
"Golf is happiness. It's intoxication w/o the hangover; stimulation w/o the pills. It's price is high yet its rewards are richer. Some say its a boys pastime but it builds men. It cleanses the mind/rejuvenates the body. It is these things and many more for those of us who truly love it." M.Norman

Glad to hear you liked the place.  I felt I was going pretty far out on a limb to put a 4200 yard course at the very front of the book, but the point has always been to uncover something unexpected.  I would like to give a tip of the hat to Ron Whitten and Joe Passov, both of whom mentioned the course when I asked them where I should go on my quick trip to Louisiana.

About once a year I will take my family to New Orleans (2 hours away) and we will go to Audubon Zoo and I usually get to sneak in a round at Audubon Park Golf Club which is next door.  It is a fun place and a great experience.  There is very little good golf in New Orleans so I was glad to see the City make a smart decision with Audubon GC.

I walked around (through?) the course this past spring on a weekend trip to New Orleans. I made a point to after reading Tom Doak's mention that the course was interesting and might make the cover of Vol. 2. The course was certainly interesting and looked like a lot of fun. I noticed that there was a much higher percentage of walkers than you would typically see at a public course. The little clubhouse there is super cool and would be an ideal clubhouse for me personally at either a public or private course.

My wife and I played Audubon Park last year during Christmas week, before it was cool.   ;)

Seriously, as Michael and Tom (and others described), it's a cool, little intimate place that co-exists with joggers, strollers, bicyclists, picnic-ers, and tourists and has a great vibe.   Additionally, the holes are rather well done overall, and it's walkable, playable, and enjoyable on all levels.

We played with a local who was great fun and our group was behind Joe Horn, former receiver of the Saints who was (in)famous for his cell phone celebration on Monday Night Football.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XtsHxQNYDc

Not surprisingly, Mr. Horn was on his phone much of the round although he did stop to sign some things for local kids during the round.

We're heading to NOLA this year again at Christmas and I'm going deeper on the local flavor thing, planning to play the renovated Joseph Bartholemew Muni (formerly Pontchartrain GC) and more relevant to the Confidential Guide theme here, we'll stay one night at the casino over near Biloxi to play Tom Fazio's Fallen Oak.   May also try to play Great Southern GC while there, but would enjoy hearing others thoughts whether that's worth a visit.

What were the chances you were going to play this course as a result of being a Doak recommendation and not like it?  ;D ;D
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I played Audubon several years ago and agree that it provides a terrific experience.  The interplay with the surrounding park and jogging trails, along with the well styled houses, were quite memorable while the course was a lot of fun.

For a prime example of how a golf course can interact with and enhance its community, all while experiencing the character of New Orleans, Audubon is worth a play.

I don't know anything about Great Southern, but liked Nickaus' Grand Bear quite a bit, one of my favorite Jack courses. It's close to Biloxi.

Bill,

I played Grand Bear last year on a recommendation from redanman and enjoyed it quite a bit.   The back nine in particular is very well done and the 2nd hole is a hoot.

Fallen Oak is so highly rated that I really need to see for myself this time.

Well, I didn't play it, but I thought it looked good enough to play if you happened to be in the area and already have your clubs. Personally, I wouldn't travel back to New Orleans just to play the course. And while walking the course I didn't exactly get the feeling of running into the clubhouse to ask for a rental set or pang to hit a ball. There are plenty of other fun things to do in New Orleans that I didn't feel like I was missing anything.

Audubon reminds me a lot of the golf course at Forest Park in St. Louis, or the Charleston Muni. Fun, low-key, inexpensive, and somewhat interesting golf courses in a largely "park" setting. They are great examples of American public golf and a model to which other public (and many private) golf courses should strive for.

When I tried to stop in at Fallen Oak without advance arrangements, the golf pro on duty came out to the front gate to apologize that he couldn't let me in to have a look around the course.  That was sweet of him.  We'll never know whether I would have liked it, or not.

Played there 18 years ago at a friends wedding. Eight groomsmen with no business being out in public. Nothing like a wedding in New Orleans! ;D

Tom,

Yes, I saw that in your book which is why I mentioned Fallen Oak on this thread, given it's proximity to NOLA.   I understand you found some good stuff at Laurel instead.

I'm thinking of trying Great Southern in a similar vein.

Eric:

I'm pretty sure the conversion to the present course is more recent than 18 years ago ... so what was the previous course like?  It is hard for me to even imagine them trying to have a "regulation" course on that site!

Just rate it like you did Torrey Pines South and then downgrade it a few because they were mean to you like The Honors Course.  Duh. ;D ;D

Tom,

All I really remember was a lot of shade trees offering very little relief from the oppressive heat and humidity (it was a June wedding). Was this a 9 hole course originally? Looking at a Google aerial I don't think the course I played had nearly the amount of water hazards as what is there today.

Eric,

It was 18 holes packed very tightly from the looks of old aerials.   And you're correct, it appears that the large ponds were dug to provide fill and elevation because the old course looks like it had no interior ponds.

I played the old course a number of times, it was right up against the houses in a few areas.  The club house was on the West side of the property where the current course crosses over the jogging path.  I remembered liking it (junior golf in NOLA really left something to be desired)
The new course is nice, I've played it 4 times.  I need to give it another go.  I never played on it when the greens were as good as some other Metro New Orleans offerings like TPC or LaTour.

I went to Tulane in the mid-seventies, across St. Charles Ave. from Audubon Park and the course.  Played only a couple of times and remember little.

I booked in advance and paid rack rate.  No issues whatsoever!
