Any thoughts on this green or hole?
Had the pleasure if playing it  in a nice breeze with fairly quick greens. Hole location was front left, played a nice shot about 20 feet right and watched the ball circumnavigate the green. I should have known watching the player in front turn her back to the hole and then putt.

I have only played a few CBMcD courses, are green structures like this typical? I really enjoyed the course, at 6100 yards it is a handful. Great layout and a beautiful location. But five sticks in my mind. Drive into what I was told was a very normal wind, left an all out six iron for me, to a green that looked like a wild mouse ride.

What else has he done that uses such slopes?

That green is very atypical of Macdonald's work.  I have not seen another one like it. 

I think it's a terrific green, because you can play the shot you described to get at a back hole location off the sideboard on the right ... but if you try that and miss right, there is hell to pay.

Tom, do you think that green has been reworked over the years?   My only round there was in 1993 and I really don't remember the green being severely sloped.

The green on the fifth hole, for me, is what makes that hole so much fun to play.  Such a severe slope must be accounted for.  It is a shame there isn't more golf with such bold contours on the greens.  I would say the 8th at Yale, although maybe not quite as severe a slope, has similar playing characteristics in that if you use it and miss right, you will struggle to get up and down with the proceeding shot.

I agree with you. It is one of the major downsides of modern green speeds.  Yale has some fun shots around the greens, not just the putting.

You just missed it somehow ... I am certain of that because I played Mid Ocean for the first time in 1988, and that slope made quite an impression on me even then.

Thanks Tom, it really is a beautiful green. When I find my camera I am going to try to download a pic or two.

Not to be argumenitive but I cannot see how someone cannot recall that green. I had a 20 foot sideways putt with 15 feet of break. It is the one green that stands out in my mind. So many options and so many perils. Our playing companion was back right in two and picked up after an adventure when he putted into the hazard follwed by an adventure in the bunker.

What a great hole. Hell what a great course. Hole locations were behind bunkers, greens receptive but not soft. Just a great experience.

Perhaps it was the swizzles!

I found that green to be stunning as well.  I tried to get the whole right shoulder and strong contour in the first pic, although it doesn't do it justice  
 

You can kind of make out in this picture the slope, as seen from the right side and above the green just how difficult that recovery shot would be from the bunker.  Also, there is a large portion of the green that is unpinnable as a result of the great feature.  Again, a picture can almost never do the real contours justice.

I echo the comparison to the 8th green at Yale.

A caddy at MOC said that he likes to clubs guys down to play a draw off the right edge while allowing for a short miss, his reasoning being that if you pull it slightly you're in the front left bunker going uphill into the slope that is so terrific from the other side as we've seen; short straight or right miss leaves you with a manageable chip, and a well-struck shot lets you enjoy the green, like on 17.  And he never mentions that back right bunker!  It's a success for him if the first time that guys see it is from the 6th tee.

What a great place.
