Rees Jones 9 holer in Hamptons w/mansion
« on: August 15, 2003, 02:41:17 PM »
The Wall Street Journal reports today that a Hamptons estate is now on the market for $75 million.

Expensive? Surely. But for that you get your own golf course, nine holes designed by Rees Jones.

Anyone play here? Who owns it?

Would the property be worth more or less if C&C did the 9 holer?

This property may well be located in Bridgehampton directly opposite the entrance to the Atlantic Course. From what I heard, the owner was an Atlantic member who got pissed off that his young son wasn't allowed to play Atlantic unaccompanied by an adult>so the member resigned his membership & hired Rees to build him his own course across the street! john

According a post in AOTD #63's thread, the property across the street is ? Gordon's (member of Atlantic) private 4-hole course with numerous tees and angles (making 13 different holes).

Does anyone know anything about Stony Hill CC, a club that
has yet to achieve permitting (due to ecoterrorists) for 10
years, located across the road intersection directly west of
East Hampton GC, yet is routed and cleared?

my understanding is that the story about Atlantic regarding a child relates to Ken Bakst and his son and was the reason for the creation of Friars Head.

JohnnyJumpStart,

I guess that is how fables and rumors begin,
with misinformation.

Your version is incorrect.

Blimey, that's the ugliest aerial I've ever seen of a golf course; it looks like spilt milk everywhere.  Top 100 in the US :P

Paul;

Does the "spilt milk" look better aesthetically at ground level?

MM,

Technically speaking, yes I have played it. I pulled over one December morning between Christmas and New Years coming back from picking up coffee and newspapers, jumped over the fence and hit a tee ball. Rudy Giuliani is quoted in a national golf publication as doing the same at National, so I am in good company ;). I am pretty sure it is owned by one of the Gordon family members, a big NYC Real Estate family, and he is a Atlantic member. I biked by Atlantic and The Gordon Course(?) and I don't recall ever seeing anyone out there. I believe you can configure it so that you can play 13 different holes into 9 greens. The land is similar to Atlantic and looks from the distance to be similar to Atlantic, which by the way I have confessed to liking a number of times here.

$75 million for this property 8 miles from the beach seems a tad much for this property, but if I was right all the time, I would not be headed to work this morning on a perfect golf day. Maybe I should move to Maine !!

At last, the answers I have been seeking. Thank you.

Don't you have any wedding day golf stories for us?

10:30 AM ceremony, so no golf that day, and no clubs on the honeymoon to France. However, two days before, I played with two friends at Shinnecock, on a cool and windy Fall day. One of the great golf days of my life !!
