Two photos on the Wondering in Wales thread got me thinking that some greens on par-4's and par-5's would make terrific par-3's.

The example that come to mind is the 3rd at Tenby. A terrific par-4 to say the least, and I'm not suggesting for one minute that it should be changed one bit, but the green seems to shout 'par-3' to me.

Any other par-4 or par-5 greens that folk feel this way about? And for that matter, any par-3 greens that would be better on longer holes?

The 7th at NGLA or 17th at TOC would be world class par 3 greens from almost any and every angle.

    I think I remember a green from my childhood at what used to be called Runaway Brook and is now International in Stowe, Mass.  I think it was the 5th.  The green was 150 yards from front to back - a legitimate par 3 in and of itself.

Without thinking too much, 4 at Kingsley popped into my head if the turf still ran the same, it was maybe slightly down hill, and had a length of  200 or more.  Maybe this just says I've hit too many long shots into a short par 4, but whether the hole in up tucked behind the ridge or in the narrow bowl in the back, hitting running shots into that green is always really fun.

I'd add a double plateau to the mix.

A green similar to # 11 at NGLA, and, from almost every angle.

Part of the genius of that green is it's orientation in light of the prevailing winds

It's actually drivable from the white/red tees for a hitter of decent length.  I'm not a long hitter, maybe a little longer than average at best, and I can drive it from those tees,, and it's a lot of fun. One of the new tees on the left side of the fairway will be a ladies tee that may be even closer. It's a huge target, and with that bowl, it really accepts long shots.
