Pat,

I am not sure if it was Loupe or MacKenzie, but one of them had fourteen practice swings from just off the green at the 18th at the Valero.
Open. I would suggest that they switch on the lights.

Would the Lords of Augusta ever deem it appropriate to put a little more teeth in an appropriate pace of play policy?  The mind reels at the influence the Lords could bring to the issue.

You mean like actually penalize someone?
They were the last to do so, and the first to do so in several years in Major play.

Give fair warning and proceed accordingly.  The warning alone would bring significant attention to the issue.

It'll be painfully slow although without a 2 tee start there's a chance it won't be quite as bad as usual.

Personally I'd like to see them ban yardage books.  Hogan never needed one and it'd surely make things a bit quicker.

In soccer and rugby you get yellow cards and red cards. Yellow is a lessor punishment. Red is off the pitch and don't come back.

Slow play, player finds a yellow card on the next tee with his name on. Player carries on being slow, finds both another yellow and a red with his name on at a future tee. Two yellows = one red and your off the course for the rest of the tournament. No officials around to debate it, just leave the cards! :)

The nature of TV does not show how long it takes these guys to play 18 holes.  They cut out to other holes in between shots.  All we see is their elaborate pre-shot routines, and no sense of how long it's taking them to actually play golf ... which is part of the problem.

The other part of the problem is that an elaborate pre-shot routine times 50 or 60 tee-to-green shots in one round, takes a lot longer than when you are only making 35 full swings.

Yeah, an eighth-grader. Profiles in officiating courage.  ::)

That example, believed to be only time a penalty ever has been assessed at The Masters, shows bad times are like drug tests: they're really just intelligence tests. Those who get caught tend to be those who lack the sophistication to manipulate the system.

Tom,

The tee times are published and one only has to look at their watch as they complete # 18 to ascertain the time it took them to play.

TV might actually deceive the viewer in terms of determining the "time to play" as the network can always cut away to another topic/player and then come back to the golfer when he actually makes his swing..

And will our lives improve if the pros speed up?

Will local courses that depend on revenue, or clubs whose membership rolls are key, suddenly say "Augusta penalized those guys and so, like sheep, we will penalize you!" question mark.

Golf will persevere despite the intrusion of the modern professional game. Professional sports of any skill serve to inform the non-believer that such a pursuit exists. Beyond that enlightenment, its impact is minimal.

Ron,

Televised weekly PGA events have a significant impact upon the world of golf and the telecast of the Masters has an even greater impact.

So yes, what ANGC does during Masters week can benefit golf and all those who golf.

I was meaning that he didn't take ages calculating yardages yet, because of his preparation, still always knew exactly how far he had to hit each shot.  I do appreciate he was extremely deliberate.

The truly sad thing is that taking nearly 5 and a half hours isn't even considered slow or worthy of comment anymore.

Not sure about the first group yesterday, but on Friday's round Bubba Watson's group took 5:07 and the final group took 5:23.  Glacial.

It would be great to know how much time a round took from decade to decade at the Masters.  When the green speeds were slower and the greens were firmer.  (less marking of the ball)

They used to play in twos so it'd be difficult to properly compare. Although if it keeps getting slower they'll be running out of daylight in a few years.
