Best GCA Insult: When I told my wife I was going to Michigan to play the Midwest Mashie, she said "Oh, is this with your Internet friends? Your Match.com Golf social group? Is your Internet Boyfriend going?"
My wife says the same damn thing each time I traveled to meet GCA guys this year--Cincy, Pete Dye GC and Kingsley. My wife also questioned whether I had to perform any special "services" in exchange for invites to certain courses. Apparently it's not uncommon because Brian Finn's wife told my wife that she says the same things to him all the time.
Best Course Played: The Golf Club (edging out Canton Brookside)
Best New Course Played: Canterbury (just edging out Kingsley)
Best Round: 71
Best Round (score) with GCAers: 74 at Kingsley with Brian Finn and Buck Wolter.
Best GCA Trooper: Jonathan Becker, for joining me and Matt Elliott for 18 holes of rain and cold during a round at my home course in late October when NO ONE else even thought about driving into the parking lot.
Best GCA player played with: Becker, Bill McKinley, Matt Schmidt
Most Friendly GCAer: Too many to mention
Best Equipment Change: Switching to AP2 irons (also moving from Trues to Ecco Bioms)
Best Hat: The simple white hat I found in the Canterbury pro shop.
Best Shirt: Peter Millar summer comfort polo I found in the pro shop at Scioto.
Best Shot: The near back-to-back aces I almost made on #9 at Kingsley--hit it to a foot each time. Runner-up is the hole out eagle I had on #2 at my home course--3rd shot from 155 after pitching out from the trees.
Best Golf Trip: Kingsley for the Midwest Mashie
Best Lunch during Golf: Taco bar at Kingsley between rounds
Best Dinner after a great day of golf: Dinner at Kingsley after 40+ holes
Best Chair in a Clubhouse: Leather chairs next to fireplace in The Golf Club lockeroom.
Best New Par 3 played: 5 at Kingsley
Best New Par 4 played: 4 at Canterbury
Best New Par 5 played: 1 at Kingsley
Best Old Par 3 played: 7 at Canton Brookside
Best Old Par 4 played: 5 at The Golf Club
Best Old Par 5 played: 18 at Canton Brookside
Best "I played this hole bad but loved it": 16 at Canterbury (think I made an 8-ish)
Best hole that I played despite awful score: Made birdie on my third ball on #5 at my home course in the club championship, after piping first two tee shots OB right.
Best shot under pressure: Cut 7 iron from 165 around a tree to 5 feet in an inter club match with my home course. Still missed the putt but won the hole.
Best course that I was going to play but couldn't: Kirtland because the course received 4+ inches of rain and flooded the day before.
Biggest disappointment: Not getting my new Mackenzie walker in time for Xmas (still waiting for the damn thing).
