Los Angeles Golf- Sunday Morning

Going to be in LA for the weekend and my buddy and I want to sneak in a round before catching my flight. Anybody got a suggestion for where to play?

Rustic Canyon.  Or Trump LA.  Both are great courses and worth the distance from the airport.  I like RC more.  Maybe others have suggestions, but I know most public courses closer to the airport are very crowded and usually take at least 5 hours.

Trump is overseeding at the moment.  They punched the entire course just this week.  Rustic is the obvious choice, but just know exactly how long you need to get back to the airport.  Rustic is 52 miles away from LAX.  That could be anywhere from 45 minutes to 2.5 hours.  Sunday traffic usually isn't bad, but I wouldn't count on it.  Do you fly out on Sunday?

Lost Canyon which is in Simi Valley is great, they have 36 holes of very good picturesque golf.  It a Pete Dye golf course but not a  typical Dye course as a matter of fact it finishes on a par 5 as opposed to the typical Dye long 4 par finishing hole. Its cut though the mountains and for a public golf course its really good.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Rustic Canyon is too far, I doubt I would make my flight. Looks like we are staying in the OC Saturday night so either there or the central LA courses would be the best choices. I have played Tijeras Creek a few times and it's ok, anything better than that in OC? Trump National might be doable, and it appears the aerification happened last week so the greens might be OK by Sunday.

I've been underwhelmed with the public access courses in the LA area.  Not to mention the amount of traffic involved and time needed to get to and fro, if you're on a tight schedule.  Just north of Pasadena is Angeles National, a Nicklaus course, pretty F&F when I played it about 2 years ago. You should be able to get to LAX within an hour.  There's a local muni Brookside, with 2 18 hole courses which looks interesting, although I haven't played it.  Maybe someone in the area could provide mroe info.  I have played Black Gold and Strawberry Farms which were nice, but not exactly near the airport.

The Industry Hills courses are pretty nice. The Babe and the Ike. Not great natural courses but quality tracks for what they are. On Sunday, no more than a 45 minute drive to LAX.

Coyote Hills in Fullerton is a fun public near your hotel and all the freeways to LAX.  Similar to Industry Hills but alot more convenient.

I respectfully disagree. Although I'll grant you that it is picturesque.

Well, if you can get a game with Emp. Tom Naccarato, maybe ChesterWashington (closest LAX) or Recreation Park in Long Beach.
But only go if you can get a game with him.

You don't have to be a magazine rater to play Riviera. Give em a call, just be ready to pay. Like all things in LA...just have a story.

Ok..realistically, flying out of LAX at 1pm...you need to be there by 12 if not earlier.  I dont think you will be able to get first times anywhere public and anything past 7 am will put you past 12 am arrival.  Go play 9 at Terranea in Palos Verdes a couple of times.  Highly regarded Todd Eckenrode design that I believe will appeal to many GCA senses.  Side streets to LAX from the course.

Thanks for the thoughts on Terranea, gents.  The link you have there is their revamped website, as I was suprised to see that the bottom pic is actually Trump LA, not Terranea!  Have no idea why.  But if you click on a few other of the links in the golf section, you can see some images of the course and illustration of the routing.

We just completed a renovation/restoration of Palos Verdes Golf Club nearby as well, which is a really fun, under the radar Billy Bell Sr. course from 1924.

Santa Anita and Brookside are serviceable munis that are about an hour from LAX.  Terranea is a great option and a little closer to LAX, so long as you take side streets down to the South Bay and  then PCH.  I thought PVGC was private?

Terranea, Trump and PVGC are generally in the same area and thus can get to LAX the same way as stated above.  Los Verdes is a municipal nearby as well with spectacular views and a good design, but is infamously crowded unless you get one of the first tee times of the day.

I would still play Riviera skipping the 7th, 8th and 9th so I could make my flight. If things get really tight skip the 11th and 17th on the back.
