The Rim/Chaparral Pines at Payson, AZ
« on: August 07, 2003, 02:22:15 PM »
I am curious if anyone out there has been to Payson, AZ to see and play either of these two courses. Chaparral was done by Graham/Panks and The Rim is a Weiskopf/Moorish project.
I am also interested to hear what the surrounding real estate project looks like. Is it out in the middle of nowhere or could you spend a couple of months there without going stir-crazy?
Any feedback is welcome. Thanks.

David:

Payson is a place where you go for major league rest and relaxation. As the sun goes down the sidewalks get pulled in for the day. The town is about 75-90 minutes from downtown Phoenix. I can't speak to your level of stir-crazy-itis but if you're a type "A" personality then you better have someone shoot you with a few needles of something to cal you down because you may find the pace to be a bit s-l-o-w. Nonetheless, I do like it and I'm type "A".

I believe the Panks / Graham design at Chapparal Pines is among the very best in AZ -- my personal top five and I've played everything that's worth a salt in the Grand Canyon State. There is a good mixture of holes and the views are secondary to the features that Panks / Graham have imbued with the design. Panks is often undervalued as a designer because most of his designs are in that area of the country.

The Rim is simply beautiful but lacking in any depth. You have a number of holes where forced lay-ups are the rule and much of it is in maximizing the off-site views than the on-course qualities. Yes, there are a few holes that can cause the blood pressure to rise (the par-5 13th is a quite good for that!) -- but it's more for the eye and the spectacular Mongollon Rim that one can view off in the distance.

You won't go wrong in playing both but Chapparal Pines is really IMHO the finest higher-elevation course in AZ (5000+) -- and that includes the 36 at Forest Highlands and anything else you may find in Prescott.

Matt-

Thanks very much for your reply.  Exactly the kind of feedback I am looking for.

Anyone else care to chime in?

David -- My wife and I have been intrigued by the concept of Payson -- warm but not blazing in the summer, cool but not snowy (like Flagstaff) in the winter -- for several years, and finally decided to visit Payson this spring on our drive back to Minnesota from Tucson, where our daughter will be attending college this fall.

I concur with Matt about the area -- beautiful (really beautiful) but sleepy. After making the stunning 80-minute drive north from Phoenix, we pulled into the pine-studded community around sunset, checked into a "main drag" (such as it is) motel and drove around looking for a place to have a drink and meet some locals. In most towns we've visited, it's easy to find the center of action; in Payson, we never did. We ended up back at a bar/pool hall in a small strip mall near our motel -- where we ran into one of the assistant pros at The Rim. If he's like most other people in Payson, it's an extremely friendly town. He invited us out to his course to play the next morning, and even though we really didn't have time, we both gave serious thought to blowing up our travel plans for a round at the Rim.

Sanity prevailed, but as we left the next morning we decided to drive by the course (just east of town); it looked fantastic, from what we could see, but access was limited. It's a gated community, and even starting up the access road to the clubhouse caused the guard to start walking down the driveway to meet us. I didn't like the exclusivity of the development, which seemed somewhat superfluous, given the fact that Payson itself is really an isolated -- but beautiful, did I mention beautiful? -- town. Maybe on our next visit to Tucson, we'll swing by Payson again with a half-day to spare and see if the offer from the pro still stands. If so, I'll report.

Rick-

I think our minds are pointed in the same general direction. Several years ago I swore to myself I would never live in a "gated golf course community" or drive an SUV/Volvo station wagon. As I get older, it is getting a little harder to keep those promises!

I have family in Tucson & Phoenix and my wife grew up in Flagstaff, so I really should get to Payson and have a look around.

Thanks for the input!

Both courses are excellent. I actually perferred The Rim, but I only got to play each course once. The Rim has more eye candy, more elevated tees....and I kind of like that.

I don't know which course I would prefer if I played them a number of times.

Payson is well discribed previously.

There are a couple of new developments in Flagstaff since I've been there. That is more of a town, and the weather is better than Payson, which can get pretty steamy in the summer. Nonetheless, I liked both courses very much.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Quassi-

Thanks for the feedback.
One question - how would you rate the courses for walkability?
