Scotland Run Golf Course
« on: September 20, 2013, 07:01:59 PM »
I played this Steven Kaye gem today for the first time in a couple of years. It is in fantastic shape - firm and fast - greens are fabulous. Fast and true. Even had left hand green on number 2 in play - turns a humdrum hole into a fabulous tough, long, dog-leg par 4. This is as good as public access course as there is in the Philly area. Although the regular greens fees are $95.00 on week-ends, including Fridays, they now have adopted some kind of demand based on-line greens fee system. On line our green fee was $78.00, but there were still tee-times available and they were priced on-line at $70.00 late yesterday. Like airplane seat pricing. The crowning moment came when my playing partner eagled both #6 and #7 by jarring his second shots (pitching wedge and 8 iron, respectively). Needless to say, he bought the after round refreshments! Totally amazing.

David,

How was the pace of play?

While Scotland Run is a fine course when it is in good condition, with the advent of Woodcrest and Lulu into the public arena in the area, I would place it behind those courses and even Glen Mills. If you venture into the Atlantic City area, ACCC and Tiwsted Dune come into play.

Pace of play was great - 4 hour round; I was surprised by what good shape it was in - since it has had its problems in the past. I would put it slightly above Glen Mills (which I really like, but a few holes there - are a little too quirky for me); Lulu I agree is great fun, and a classic -  but not comparable - two completely different types of courses. Twisted Dune is also one of my favorites and I would place it above Scotland Run, but it isn't as convenient to Philly;  Woodcrest is high on my list to try, but haven't gotten there yet - but hear they are keeping it in excellent condition and plan to get out there asap.

I like Scotland Run a lot as well.  There are some fun holes and Kaye seems to try and use a lot of different architectural devices in each of his courses, especially here, that are effective.  The carries over the quarry, alternate green on the Second and the Eighteenth immediately come to mind.  I usually play there off season or during the week, so have never run into any crowd issues.

I actually have it as #9 in my rankings of Philadelphia area courses.  I have Glen Mills and LuLu ranked higher.

Think about the variety in TD, SR, and GM all an hour from Philly. One is a manufactured Irish course, another is in a sand quarry, and the last set in the hills running down to a creek.I find it less interesting to rank them and more fun to play them.

Mayday - could not agree more! But I know you must really love TD as there is not one tree on the whole course!

 ??? 8) :-[

Had to chime in . We denuded Twisted Dune of all trees in 1998 , prior to construction . It 's amazing how many scrub pines have grown between some of the holes in a decade.  It's not at  all choked by growth , that's at least a decade away, but Mother Nature finds a way to reclaim her turf !
