Besides wicker baskets and pin flags, what else exists?

Is there another option aside from baskets and flags to sit on a pin?

I once played a course (I think it was 6 or 7 holes only) in West Texas where on the top of the pin were old license plates.

... to sit on a pin? ...

There are no pins on a golf course, the USGA / R&A Rules of Golf does not reference "pins", do you mean flagstick?  ;)

So it is still a flagstick if it has a wicker basket on it?

In old 1910-1920 photos of courses you often see no flag on top of the flagstick -- metal flanges with the hole number were fairly common, and wicker baskets showed up in many different locales.

I've never seen the metal flanges at a course in my travels the past 40 years.  Apart from the baskets at Merion, I've seen wind socks in Hawaii, and odd little pennants a time or two (including LA Country Club).  The very short flagsticks at Secession also stand out as oddities.

Different form of windsock at Chambers Bay. Used as their logo and US Open logo.

.........Don't know if they are being used this year, though........

Are there any triangular (yacht club type) flags out there, in the real world -- or are those restricted to graphic illustrations everywhere?

White Clay Creek CC, which is in Delaware Park, has jockey helmets instead of flag sticks.

Would a suitable replacement for flags at a new course just north of Aberdeen be golden coloured hairpieces!

All the best
