Eastern PA golf
« on: May 16, 2013, 08:32:46 AM »
So I've been doing the drive across I80 from the Midwest to NYC for many many years, but this is the first chance I have to play some golf en route.  Does anyone know of any good places to play along the way in the eastern/central PA areas?  Are the Penn State courses worth checking out?

I do like Iron Valley, a P.B. Dye course:

Hawk Valley (Gordon) is right next to the PA Turnpike and is good value:

On the private side, if you can find your way on to Lancaster CC (Flynn), don't miss it!

And the private Lebanon CC (Findlay) really has its moments, especially the back nine:

Last week on my way back to PA from Chicago I finally stopped at the Warren Course at ND for an impromptu round. Great experience and I would be hard pressed to think that there would be a better diversion from the Rt 80 corridor for a stop and play.

If you substitute the PA turnpike/Rt 78 southern route through PA you open up a few good possibilities- Hershey, Architects, Morgan Hill and Berkleigh. Those might be better than what you might find on the northern PA route.

Late edit- I see Joe has already vectored you south for some good options  :)

Check out the Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg, PA near the campus of Bucknell Univ - my alma mater.  It is about 15 miles south of Rte 80, south of Williamsport.

Some small greens and a little bit of quirck.  Nice rolling terrain and fun views of the Susquehanna Valley Hills including the Chillisquaque Ridge.  A tad hilly, but walkable for most people. I think it is a 3.5 star GD rating for what that is worth.  The yardage is about 6240 with 132 slope.  The last few times I was there it was in good shape, and a ton of trees and underbrush had been removed, although you would think it looks normal now.

The first nine was built in 1935 and the other later in the 1950s.  Most of the people you meet there will be friendly.  Cute little clubhouse.

The small downtown is quiant, and you can get a good meal at a number of places including the Lewisburg Hotel.  The new Hampton Inn is a decent place to stay.

Enjoy and go through the beautiful campus on the way downtown to ea.

How about Bedford Springs... isn't that right off of the PA Turnpike?

Yes.  Excellent choice, IMO.

I'll add into the fray Wanango in Oil City PA.  Its about 25 minutes north of I-80 in the western part of PA.  Its a tillinghast and a ton of fun without being too penal.

+2 for Bedford Springs.

I'll also pitch Latrobe CC in Latrobe PA if you take I-76.  Home of Mr. Palmer.  You see his umbrella trademark everywhere in town - car dealers, hotels, and tee markers.

Thank you all for the great suggestions.  I'm seeing whether or not I have the time to venture off the I-80 route.  I'm leaning towards Bedford Springs, but will definitely let you know.

Chris--glad you liked the Warren course.  I live in SW Michigan and my parents live in the South Bend area, so I've played there a few times over the years.  Great track in my opinion.

There's nothing wrong with Bedford Springs. And, yes, it's right of the TPK. I've only played there once but you can count me as a fan.

That said, it's most certifiably a central PA course and not an eastern PA course.

As a former member, Schuylkill Country Club is a fantastic little Ross course that nobody knows about thats not too far off of your route.

Some really neat late era Ross greens.

Doug

??? I played there once and have no desire to ever see it again.

Doug - What about Mountain Valley would make you recommend it someone? It's been a few years so I could be wrong but I remember finding it very penal with lost balls possible on almost every shot.

Jim,

I swear that has always been fun for me. I alway like to 'try' the heroic shots. I buy golf balls from an older man who sells them [in great shape] for $5/dozen. So I part with them easily and try again.

Besides, it is a very pretty area to play in. I enjoyed myself immensely.
