State of the Union with Mike Keiser
« on: May 14, 2013, 10:24:18 AM »
Matt Ginella catches up with Mike Keiser to discuss:

*  Bandon Muni: "It’s no better than 50/50 that this will happen. ... “There’s a cultural divide. Not to cast aspersions, but they’re afraid,” Keiser said. He’ll meet with the State on May 15, where he'll make his final offer.

*  Punchbowl putting course: "Soft opening in September and then, due to the newness of the turf, closing it again in October until the spring of 2014."

*  A second par 3 course at Bandon: "Considering a second par-3 course, which would be located in the dunes south of the second hole at Bandon Trails. ... Don’t be surprised if it’s designed by David McLay Kidd."

* Cabot Cliffs: "Keiser reports the recent acquisition of two pieces of land necessary to maximize the potential of Cabot Cliffs. Including one parcel of land that will be the 16th tee, which will be the launching pad to a mythical par 3, not unlike a flopped and shorter version of the 16th at Cypress Point."

"Another difference between Keiser’s two projects – Bandon Muni and all that is Cabot Links – is a man on the ground navigating the trenches of red tape. Ben Cowan-Dewar, Keiser’s partner at Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs, is a Canadian who has tirelessly helped 'sell' Keiser’s vision and his past successes."

Hopefully Mike set Ginella straight on Ben Crenshaw and his false statements made a few months ago on the Golf Channel about Crenshaw's involvement at C&C.

Somebody on this board wouldn't hold an impressive course record in Oregon?

A gorse choked fire hazard that no one wants.

one less member on this board. I owe my love of GCA to Goodwins book "Dream Golf" If I had never read that I doubt I would have ended up here...Sadly "One divot at a time" also guided my path in this direction.

I wouldn't give up on the muni yet, Keiser is a business man and this is still in negotiation, this might be a tactic.

Best guess is that MK's 50/50 comment is a bit of posturing/marketing genius as some folks I trust implicitly put the odds far more in favor of this happenning.

Joel I haven't seen what you are mentioning. Care to enlighten me?

Connor:

Ginella called Crenshaw "topdressing" with respect to the team's finished products.

Sven - can you describe the context in which C&C were referred to as "top-dressing"?

Here's the quote:

"Coore confirmed that although his design partner, Ben Crenshaw, always said he never wanted to work on courses outside of the U.S., that in this particular case, given the property and the upside of the project, that he will be involved. To what degree, Coore can’t say, but Crenshaw has always simply served as top-dressing to their finished products, which includes the recent restoration of Pinehurst No. 2, Keiser’s Bandon Trails and Bandon’s new par 3 course, Bandon Preserve."

HOWARD, thanks for pointing out Ben's partnership.  BEFORE I'd heard of Keiser and Bandon I knew Ben and of his Cabot Links project.
