New "Morning Drive" travel segment
« on: April 06, 2013, 04:00:51 PM »
Golf Channel's "Morning Drive" is focusing greater attention on travel now that Matt Ginella has joined the program.

Last week, they kicked off a new "Runways to Fairways" travel segment that is running on Tuesdays in the 2nd hour. To me, it's akin to Anthony Bourdain's "The Layover" series that previously aired on The Travel Channel. Drop the host into a major city for two days, visit some key sights (in this case public golf courses), meet up with personalities, a couple meals, beer with friends, etc. It's an easy model and I look forward to seeing what TGC and Matt do with it.

First up: San Francisco.

The segment does a solid job of showcasing the sights and views in the City by the Bay. Matt even tests the law in putting down crooked Lombard Street (3:15 mark). He even invokes Doak's name in the process:

"A lot of double-breaker greens in golf. But this is Lombard Street. Hey Tom Doak, eat your heart out."

Bravo GC. I would like to think that Charlie Rymer is encouraging GC to increase attention to golf architecture. I know that several of his friends have urged him to give more time to the topic on his show. A year or so ago he sought ideas from the GCA treehouse.

The show is very much improved.   I do like the travel segments, but I do wish Matt would spend more time on golf an less on fluff like the Lombard Street bit.

I wish Matt would go to some "untraditional" golf destinations. Orlando? Las Vegas? There is a ton of info out there.

How about Bandon? Cabot? Green Lake Wisconsin? North Dakota? Minnesota?

Agree that would be nice. Unfortunately, it won't happen as the segment is sponsored by Southwest Airlines; thus, it only features cities that are SWA destinations.

I do know that Matt has upcoming segments on Houston, Philadelphia, Denver, Chicago and Baltimore. Not sure if Minneapolis is in the radar.

Southwest is now flying in and out of both Minneapolis/St. Paul and Milwaukee -- he could do Erin Hills, the Brown Deer muni, and make a quick trip over to Lawsonia (well, not so quick -- maybe we could get a GCA crowd to host him at Spring Valley ;)).
